  • Do gas meters need electricity?

    Fairly sure this is a stupid question, but I woke up this morning to find no electricity in the cellar (fuse blown, but I’ve not a replacement at the moment) and also no gas!
    The gas meter is in the cellar, but surely it (or anything else on the gas system) doesn’t need electricity to work?

    Is it just an odd coincidence?

    What isn’t working that’s gas ?

    Your Boiler needs electricity.
    But your hob doesn’t (apart from spark/ignition)

    Gas meters don’t usually need electricity. They mechanically measure the flow of gas through the meter. Perhaps by having some sort of imp weighing it as it enters and then pushing it down the pipe to get it to the cooker & boiler.

    @nealglover – nice troubleshooting.

    Nothing that is gas is working. No gas coming out of the hob. Boiler has it’s ‘gas light’ on (electricity is fine everywhere apart from the cellar (just need to get a fuse for the cellar).

    Sounds like an odd coincidence then?

    You haven’t just accidently knocked the mains gas lever down (off)? Our’s is in a coat cupboard and it’s easy to do.
