Most people who learnt English as a second language will have an accent. My sister taught in Korea, they were told very firmly to drop the kiwi accent and apeak American !
Not sure it is quite time to reach for the tinfoil hats to protect you from the lizard people.

“Armenia and Azerbaijan are also in Asia”like most of Russia and Turkey, and all of Kazakhstan, and they’re all in UEFA toA small part of Kazakhstan is in Europe, geographically..

Dutch speakers sound Dutch to me and most others sound like they come from their area – Indian call centre anyone? I think you somewhat[ deliberately?] missed the point. So what does an israeli accent sound like ? Deliberately not like an Israeli would appear to be the answer

Deliberately not like an Israeli would appear to be the answerI got in a taxi this morning, asked the boy where his accent came from, I was expecting some obscure scottish island. Turns out he was from albania! 😆 i think I made his day! He’s been here for about 12 years!
JunkyardFree MemberThanks for that , you have now convinced me you did deliberately miss the point being discussed.

They are settlers because they are colonizing land. Land which belongs to the Palestinian people.
No way. It belonged to the Pharaohs … 🙄
Most probably both Israeli and Palestinian were slaves.
istoFree MemberErnie. My point was that you used a topic started on – “Why are Israel allowed to compete in the European Championship at football “.
As a segue into – “None of the Israeli government spokesmen I see interviewed on the news ever seem to have Middle Eastern accent”.
To bully people into talking about the topic you want really want to talk about.

None of the Israeli government spokesmen I see interviewed on the news ever seem to have Middle Eastern accents. Which is strange as most Middle Eastern government spokesmen have Middle Eastern accents.
Most of the Iranians and Saudi’s I know speek English with an American accents. Just depends where and from who they learnt English. If we didn’t have call ID on the phones I’d have assumed I was talking to someone in Texas or California.
I imagine their government spokesmen sound much more like whoever they want to appeal to, just like Gordon Brown sounded much more Scottish before the referendum than he ever did as PM.
And how most British people trying to speek French get taught a (vaguely) Parisien accent, which would be completley differetn to someone from Nice (or an English person who’d learnt French there).
stewartcFree MemberMost of the locals I work with have either strong Canadian, American or Australian accents depending on where they went to college/university.
With some of them, unless you met them in person you would never guess they were from China.
jambourgieFree MemberIsreal’s a bit like that kid at school that everyone hates but no-one’s allowed to say anything because he’s allegedly got some ‘condition’ that causes him to scream and act like a dick all the time.
surferFree MemberI dont know what school you went to but if you think no one is allowed to criticise Israel you have been living in a cave.

weird one, I get “are you from the North” as a question when speaking French in the south of France.
never really thought about being taught a regional accent!!

A bit like you’d expect a French person (or anyone else) who’s been taught English formaly to speek it with a BBC/Home counties accent, not a Geordie, Scouser or Brummie accent.
jambalayaFree MemberMy understanding was that they deliberately put up spokespeople with English or American accents because they believe that it strengthens their case that they are ‘one of us’ not ‘the other’ and means they’re more likely to have their message favourably received.
Exactly this.
If you think really hard about it you might eventually realise that was the point I was making.
Israel is a Western colony in the Middle East.
Israel is the only country in the world that I’m aware of which still talks of having “settlers”.
They are settlers because they are colonizing land. Land which belongs to the Palestinian people.
The Jews who lived for 1000’s of years in various parts of North Africa where driven out after the war. The Jews where given the land after the war – rightly or wrongly but that’s what happened. The brutal fact is most of the rest of the Arab world don’t greatly care or support them in their continued behaviour. As I’ve posted before Jordon was reported to the UN for refusing Palestinian refugees fleeing Syria and the Jordanians claimed the West Bank was their territory not Palestine. The Israeli’s could just as easily pick one of many millions of ethnically Middle Eastern citizens but they deliberately choose their spokespeople as per @waswas’s point above. The Jewish people have come from the Middle East and Eastern Europe, a very large portion of the more ethnically “Western Europe” population was wiped out in the Holocaust. The “Western” people you are speaking of are Jews who fled to the US during or after the war and are now choosing to live in Israel.jambalayaFree Membernever really thought about being taught a regional accent!!
I suppose its the same as being taught “BBC english” as above
Indeed there is quite a regional variation although not as much variety as we have in the UK. I was told many years ago by a friend not to mimic the dialect used in the movie “Jean de Florette” as it’s very “Southern” and the recent movie “Bienvenue chez les chi’tis” exaggerates and mocks the accent from the far North.
chewkwFree MemberI learned English accent from Hammer Horror export … I say my good man.
I learned American accent from Hollywood … God dammit!
I combine them to create a bastardised accent … Goddamn what a tosser!
😆

Yes of course, I’ve bullied people into posting stuff which they much rather have not posted, I mean just look at you, I have repeatedly forced you, against your will, to talk about something which you really didn’t want to talk about. And I wouldn’t even let you ignore my original comment, which is what you really wanted to do ! ffs

Well I never thought I would see you make such an enlighten comment concerning Israel jambalaya. Yes there is little doubt that Israelis like to appeal to innate racism and bigotry in the West, portraying themselves as “one of us” while Palestinians, with their highly suspicious Arabic accents are clearly “one of them” and therefore obviously dodgy.
I hope this unexpected revelation represents a more honest attitude towards the Israeli apartheid regime 🙂
enfhtFree MemberErnesto was suggesting you don’t belong to a country unless you speak the language using the correct accent. This is not his fault, the Marxist commune where he resides hasn’t received any new members since 1968.
ernie_lynchFree MemberThere is little doubt that Israeli government spokesmen ‘belong’ to Israel enhft
istoFree MemberYou steered the conversation down a path…..which most likely you have done many times before. In fact I hazard a guess if I use the search feature (despite its inadequacies) I will find your name brandished against several posts stating your views on the Middle East.
As I said late last night. Yawn.
ernie_lynchFree MemberI’m sorry isto am I still bullying you and forcing you to post stuff against your will ?
My original comment was clearly said in jest. You have probably forgotten what it was due to your obsessive discussion about Israeli accents. So here it is again to remind you :

JunkyardFree Memberit bored you so much that you carried on reading and posting the next day 😕
TOP TIP: when threads bore you stop reading.
OH enft Awesome to see you here and hitting big …one day you will miss yourself and hit someone else…one day .
istoFree MemberThe original topic was quite interesting. So actually was the comment about accents…..I learnt something new which is always good. The rant about Israel less so.
ernie_lynchFree MemberThe rant about Israel less so.
That there was the problem, wasn’t it ? Any criticism of the Israeli apartheid regime, which is incomparably more brutal than the former South African apartheid regime – Israel has the equivalent of the Soweto Massacre for breakfast, is unacceptable to you. So you want to bully people, to use your term, into not criticizing a very nasty and brutal regime.
mikey3Free MemberI think its terrible israel are allowed in the euro qualifers and should be kicked out as soon as possible, only because they beat bosnia easily last night ,look a decent team and we have still have to play them twice, dont want them spoiling our chances.Kick them out I say!!! 🙂
jambalayaFree MemberThere is a West Asian Tournament (interesting name), been won by Syria in 2012 and Iran quite a few times. Plus the anticipated Middle Eastern Nations. Egypt don’t play in it interestingly.
@isto, agreed let’s keep it on the footy thing. I shouldn’t have gotten involved. I thought the joke about the wall was quite a good one.
BillMCFull MemberIsraelis ‘still talk of having “settlers”‘ whereas non-jewish immigrants are referred to in the Knesset as ‘intruders’. Sadly ironic that. Just as well not all countries took/take that view.

Ernie you will notice I have not voiced my opinion on Israel as I do not think it is relevant to this thread. That is my point. I have no problem with your opinion. I just do not think sharing it on this thread is anyway helping the plight of the Palestinian people.

Yip I have no problem with that….and the joke about the wall was proper funny.
JunkyardFree MemberI just do not think sharing it on this thread is anyway helping the plight of the Palestinian people.
Would not discussing it be helping then?
PS you have spent a lot of time debating a point we should be not discussingkonabunnyFree MemberBet the bastards make a bloody good wall though.
kickoffs always take ages too: the ref tells them to leave the centre circle so the game can begin, but the Israeli team thinks that should be the subject of final negotiations…
