My brother has asked me to get his road bike back into useable condition without spending too much money.

It’s about 20 years old with a 6 speed block and changers on the downtube, no fancy indexing.

The chain is trashed and the rear derailleur needs replacement.

Any suggestions as to a reasonable rear unit that will do 6 speed, (current one is a Sachs/Huret)? I presume a Shimano HG40 would be a suitable chain.

    Cheers

Any cheap dérailleur should work AFAIK
All the indexing is in the shifters

Is there any issue with the size/thickness of the jockey wheels, I can only get one out of the old unit as the second is rivetted in? 😕

I’m trying to recall what my brother did – but I’m sure he just used a modern one

    Cheers uplink.

I’ve seen some cheap sale ones on CRC so I’ll probably get one of those.
