I've just ordered a set of M750 XT cranks. They're square taper, and have a removable spider. I just want to make sure the spider uses the same splines as the XTR M950, so I can use the Middleburn replacement spider if I want.

Also, apart from Boone, does anyone make a one-piece SS chainring that'll fit?

Does this help much?

I suspect not, otherwise lots of people from the era of M950 stuff would have fitted XT spiders and chainrings, which I'm not aware of anyone having done, considering they're the same age it would have been an obvious workaround!

In fact... come to think of it I didn't think the spider was removable on M750 chainsets.

Not many shimano spiders are removable are they - is this what he means?

EditL

Found on an old forum:

Hershey Racing make a nicely machined 94 BCD spider for the old (M952) XTR or XT (M750) cranks. might be worth looking into.

Where did you order these from please? Been running M750 cranks for last couple of years since getting some NOS ones and always on the look out for more.

It is. As is the set of LX M570 cranks in front of me.

Never tried to remove the spider though...sorry.

Well it looks like foxyrider's answered the question! I'm surprised more people didn't do that to get around the extortionate costs of M950 rings.

I've been surfing for more info, not much but I did find exploded diagrams of M750, M751 and M752 chainsets. M750 came with 4 or 5 arm removable spider and is square taper. M751 and M752 use press-fit 4 arm spiders and Octalink (only difference I can see is fatter arms on the later model, and M751 came as a tandem option too 🙂 ).

Also came across this. It's in German (I think) but has exploded diagrams of just about every chainset Shimano ever made, and pics of quite a lot too. There may well be other pages for other parts too, but I haven't looked around it yet.

What? That's an M950 and an M952 chainset, the only difference was just the M950 was 8 speed, the M952 was 9 speed. The big ring on the M950 was less heavily machined and had a 'groove' running all the way around the front of the big ring too.

Aye, but we knew the spider was removable on the M950, that wasn't the issue, or have I totally misunderstood!? I think it's been confirmed by nuke among others anyway.

Just adding to the overall agreement or removable spiders 🙂

I'll tell you, but I'll have to kill you...

Actually, it was CRC, but I'm half expecting them to email tomorrow saying they're out of stock.

Just got an email saying the cranks are dispatched 🙂 I still won't believe it until they're in my hands though. And I may have found a Spot 34t SS chainring to go on them too.
