I had an OTB gone wrong on Sat and have ended up in a cast today with a suspected broken scaphoid bone in my wrist.

So for when I’m eventually able to tackle some singletrack again, I’m going to need some wrist protection.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks 🙂

I only sprained my wrists but it was bad enough to cause pain for a year, I found these 661 wrist wraps let me ride pain free: left and right .

They helped keep the wrist aligned and being dirt cheap I think they’d be worth a try.

All the best with your recovery!

When I broke mine I started with the 661 wrist wrap. It gives decent support but is quite restrictive. When I’d healed a bit I moved to some wrist wrap gloves (made by fox but no longer available, and I searched really hard for old stock to replace than). These days it still gives me grief but it comes and goes. On bad days I wear a decathlon neoprene wrap that gives support without to much restriction

Not really a suggestion, but — I fractured my distal radius, and ended up having a plate put in. I think I was off the bike for five months in the end. However when I returned to riding I didn’t need any wrist support. It did take me a little while to regain my mojo though!

    Healing vibes 🙂

I broke my scaphoid about 10 years ago and have pain whilst cycling and limited movement. I now use an Allsport Dynamics OH2 wrist brace, it’s not cheap but I have no issues with wrist pain whilst using it so it’s been worth every penny.

I also used one of these. I made a right mess of my wrist about 4 years ago & it enabled me to ride a lot sooner than I should have been able to. I tried loads of others, but found they never really worked, or were bloody uncomfortable etc.

My wrist is still buggered now, but it doesn’t hurt to ride any more, so I don’t use or need a brace any longer, but if I did something to it or the other one again, i’d buy one in flash, despite the cost.

Good 2nd hand value too – the actual cost of ownership wasn’t much 🙂

Basically there’s 2 sides, protection and support.

I’m just back to riding after a pretty minor wrist fracture, the 661 is useful for extra support while riding but might be overkill for me, it’s a wee bit restrictive and pressurey for all day riding. But I’m more wearing if for the inevitable crashes, and I’ve absolutely no idea if it’ll help for that. it should stop me overextending the joint out of its limited comfort/non-agony range but it’s more optimism that it’ll protect hte still weak bone.

Still, ideal megavalanche prep I reckon

Thanks for the suggestions guys, this is the second time I have broken this bone and I’m probably really asking is there a way of protecting it from falls in the future?

It healed really well last time, but I’m not so hopeful this time as I’m 9 years older 😐

Used a brace/support from decathlon a couple of years ago whilst recovering from a broken radius, removed the metal splint and it was easily the best I could find without spending silly money

There’s loads of different wrist strengthening exercises. Lookup CARS exercises. Look at what gymnasts do to strengthen and prep their wrists. Basketball players bucket of rice etc. But first and foremost you should have daily rehabilitation exercises. Just take it easy until its recovered.

When I broke my scaphoid I ended up with a bone graft and Herbert screw.  I went to the sports injury guy in Ipswich (Brian Simpson) for some electromagnetic and IR therapy.  I used an allsports brace for 4/5 months afterwards but that was a good few years ago now and I’ve crashed on it a few times since and it’s been ok.

Triple comminuted fracture through the joint surface in three planes. Plated and protected with a Demon snowboarding wrist brace for a year of riding. I wore it out in the end. Highly recommended. You’ll forget you are wearing it

Is the 661 guard for protection for over extension or for support?

    I looked it up

The Wristwrap pro is a slim fitting wrist support designed to give extra confidence and be worn both under or over gloves.

So it doesn’t provide anything in practical terms that wouldn’t be resolved by taking it easy.

    Worth noting.

Mrs stu used a Mobius X8 after her cast came off.
For the first few weeks she struggled to do day to day stuff but could still ride with the brace on.
    Not cheap but very good.
Also has the advantage of not having part of the brace in the way on the palm of your hand.
A lot of the top MX boys use them including Ken Roczen after his horrific injurys

Another vote for the Allsports Dynamics brace here, although the Mobius brace seems pretty good too and the way it attached to the hand is pretty good.
I made a right mess of my left wrist a couple years back (and broke the right arm and wrist at the same time, not a great day) and nearly had it fused before getting sent to a specialist who had other opinions. As I had 5 months where I couldn’t move my wrist let alone use it for anything, and I really struggled to find any good information for cyclists about the scaphoid, I ended up writing all the information I could find into one place. Which is here: http://www.chamonixbikeblog.com/2018/scaphoid-stories/

Great post Grum p and tanks for some of the brace suggestions from others. I’m keeping my fingers crossed its just a bad sprain, the swelling is well down but of course I’m still waiting on an appointment from the NHS.

I can still go running for now, just need to watch those curbs 😀

    Utter bobbins.

The wrist wrap pro keeps me riding… great bit of kit… I’d be lost without it. If you need a proper brace though, the other (non pro) 661 wrist wrap is the way to go. Too restrictive to use long term… but good to use while recovering.

Hey guys for anyone that is interested.

It turned out that I had indeed gotten a broken Scaphoid bone in my wrist. However the specialist took me out of cast after 4 weeks and I am now (supposed) to be wearing a splint for the next 4 weeks until I am discharged.

So all in all very lucky, I’m able to get out on the bike now although not on MTB trails obviously. 😀

I’ll second  on the möbius x8.

    X8 Wrist Brace

great t bit of kit I ware 2 and there very comfy to ride in and gives me conference when riding.

As above not cheep but by far the best system I’ve found and must of tried a dozen or so to help over the last few years before I had my operations last year. Don’t really need them now but still use them.
