What to do with a 2012 Giant Anthem 26er ?

My new emtb should hopefully be arriving in the next 2-4 weeks, which means I need to get rid of my existing Giant Anthem 26er small. Its frankly knackered in every way

Suspension bushings are gone, Fork/shock never serviced, Lockout broken, Grips worn flat, Tyres dangerous and no grip, Brakes need bleeding, Cable inners and outers need changing, Rear hub starting to go. Rear shifter prob needs replacing as requires lots of force to change. Frame scratched to hell.

Its one of those I wanted a new bike for the last 5 years so never did any maintenance 🙂 now it would be in the £100s to sort.

It seams wrong to chuck it in the bin, we have a local charity place that takes bikes, but from speaking to ones previously they dont like to take full sussers.

Would like to know the same, only mine is a large and possibility in a bit better condition. Converted to 1×10 a few years ago. Love it but don’t use it.

Facebook marketplace, put it up for £50, be willing to accept £25

Someone will have it for spares or they may have the parts laying around to bring it back to life

Im always on the lookout for stuff like this that i can repair and make a small profit on or strip down and sell the parts to make some extra cash for my bike fund

There’s guaranteed to be someone who would take it off your hands as a project, or just happy to have something to pedal down to the corner shop on.

If every single component is knackered, take it down the tip – otherwise just take it to the bike charity and let them decide what to use & what to throw.

Our local bike charity takes in anything, no idea what they use vs bin.

I did, but now its positively dangerous, or at least the front fork is. Its probably got about 80mm of travel that just compresses and doesnt really rebound !

I reckon to get back to working condition would be way over £500.  🙁

Anywhere near Wigan? An older guy got on the train the other day with a bike that was frankly dangerous, and I suggested he really needed to get it looked at. Turns out he’d just picked it up and volunteers for this lot:

I loved my anthem 26er from a few years later (2014). Sell it cheap to someone who has some spare parts and time on their hands to repair to former glory

Because they’re invariably ££££ to sort out and require specialist knowledge and tools which the volunteers who sort these things out won’t have.

And then once it is fixed up (at considerable cost) it then becomes too nice to just give away but also so old that it’s not worth anything. As you’ve described it, it’s probably beyond economic repair but also not so wrecked as to just take it to the tip…

Maybe try ebay or FB Marketplace with a hefty “for repair and parts only” description attached to it?

I’ve done it with completely dead bikes that aren’t worth repairing. Mainly as i have stacks of antiquated but not bad condition parts lying around. Anyone for 9 speed triple chainsets? Or rapid rise mechs? (no, not for sale!)

Leave it out the front with a bit of paper saying ‘FREE BIKE’.

It will be gone in minutes and you’ll never have to think it about it again.

The correct answer is to lock it to a town centre bike rack and walk away. Over time it will slowly be scavenged and recycled into other bikes as the bits slowly get removed.

Funny, I posted a similar thread asking about my needs-a-bit-of-work-but-still-a-good-bike 2012 Nukeproof Mega and it was taken down by the mods within minutes.

My 29er version is still the absolute business.
The only bike I sing on.

Have you tried Shrewsbury cycle hub as the local cycling charity type place.

eBay at 99p start with the description given above so people know what they are bidding on.
