I’ve got a 100 mile sportive on Sunday and will be leaving home at about 6am. I’ll need a reasonable breakfast before I go, but want as much sleep as possible and can’t risk making too much noise and waking Mrs & Jnr! I could just have weetabix, but wounder what quick and easy breakfast others can recommend?

Porridge – microwave for 3 mins. Add honey/raisins/whatever. Doesn’t get much easier than that.

    Or pop tarts.

    Porridge.

The microwave ones are even quicker…but you pay through the nose.

You can just microwave normal porridge oats.

This. Though that’s either a huge portion or a very puny microwave.

I’ve found those Weetabix breakfast drinks are ok, pretty good for recovery too if you have the protein one.

Porridge with sliced banana, mixed nuts, sultanas, blueberries and raspberries, very small squirt of honey. And black coffee obviously!

Yes, I have a huge portion.

Those Weetabix breakfast drinks – just wrong.

    from the Guardian:

Weetabix launched its On the Go breakfast drinks last year, claiming they contain “all the energy, fibre and protein” of its cereal with milk. What they don’t broadcast as loudly is that a 250ml bottle of the chocolate-flavoured milk drink also contains 22g of sugar. While one-third of this is lactose, the naturally occurring sugar found in milk, 13.5g of the total sugar content is added – equivalent to the sugar in eight Cadbury’s chocolate fingers. This compares with just 1.7g of added sugar if you eat two Weetabix biscuits with milk.

What do you normally have for breakfast? Big bowl of cereal works fine.

Dorset Cereal doused in Onken peach whole grain yoghurt, not sure what the difference is between oats in Muesli and the ones in porridge but I can’t face looking at grey pasty vile porridge, makes my stomach flip and ruins my appetite.

Oh I know, and I do, it’s just the microwave ones come in little sachets all ready to go. Just thinking of the quick/easy angle.

    Proper stove top porridge

    Oh STW…don’t ever change.

Depends how far you are driving & the start time of Sportive.
I often set off with a coffee and pull over nearer to the ride to have my 20 minute muesli. (prepared night before – don’t forget the milk)
Weetabix is super quick for up and go rides.

My son demands proper stove-top porridge every morning. It’s only a matter of time before he starts critiquing how I tamp my coffee grounds and asking how artisanal his toast is.

The issue I’m worried about is waking up and eating straight away, I’m usually awake for at least an hour before I get around to breakfast (after sorting out my son and the dog or just driving to the office!)

Why can’t you eat when you get there? Flask of boiling water, two of those mix in the tub porridge thingies and you’re good to go. Can be ‘cooking’ while you faff by the boot of your car

Agreed, they’re gopping but it’s exactly what I need pre and post ride. Anything too ‘complex carb’ pre ride gives me cramps after an hour or so.

Night before put some and handful or 2 of oats in a bowl with some natural yogurt along with some grapes/blueberries/whatever else you fancy. Add honey to taste. Mix it all up and leave it in the fridge overnight. You can then either eat it in the car on the way or even just before you start. I eat this most days on the train to work as I don’t have enough time to eat before I leave the house, it keeps me nicely full until lunch.

Why can’t you eat when you get there?

If it’s anything like the sportive’s I’ve done then there will be limited food and what is there will be crap and a long queue to get to it.

As above, porridge. If you’re really in a hurry, just bung some raw oats into a bowl with a splosh of milk and water, a smidgin of salt, and then microwave on high for about a minute or so.

Eat straight from bowl, having added sultanas/bananas/etc.

If I’ve got to eat a fast calorific breakfast I tend to go for hard boiled eggs and a bagel or bread and butter/flora buttery.

    “Have a banana,” suggested Reggie.

Why the heck do I remember the above sentence from school, nearly 30 years ago? 😯 😆
