  • What grips for a rubber allergy ?
  • I’ve built a bike up for my grrlfriend’s daughter, complete with Charge grips.
She only rode it for about an hour and her fingers went red and sore.
Apparently, she has had a similar reaction to rubber before.

I don’t know if it’s just natural or synthetic rubber, or both, that causes it, or what Charge grips are made of.
Has anyone come across this problem before and can recommend some grips for her to use ?
It’s not so much of a problem now, but she may want to wear fingerless gloves in the summer.

    Foam grips?

I use superstarcomponents ones and they’re very good. You don’t notice what they’re made of so much when you’re wearing gloves.

    Or perhaps ESI silicon grips?

Maybe. What’s foam actually made of though ? I’m guessing it’s some sort of synthetic material and might be the same as the stuff rubber grips are made of, but with bubbles.

ESI Silicon might work, Brooks do some leather grips too.

Cork is an option. Ergon do Biokork grips too but I think that there’s still a rubber patch. There there might also be the option of getting some cork bar tape and perhaps building some up into a DIY grip.

I’d try Bontrager foam (quite cheap so no biggie if they don’t work), ESI silicone grips, or Brooks leather.

I knew a lass who had a rubber allergy and she used foam grips to great effect. She once punctured in a race and ran the remaining three miles with her bike to win the race! (Karen Brammer).

Slip a couple of non-latex condoms over the grips. I know, I’m a genius.

Simplest solution might be gloves? Otherwise some road bar tape?

    Thanks for the suggestions.
It looks like some foam grips[/url] are made of neoprene.
We’ll have to do some research or experimenting to see if neoprene or silicone are OK.
I like the look of those ESI grips. I might just buy her a pair, then, depending on how she gets on with them, I’ll either have them back or buy another pair for myself.
