I think the reason some supporters want foreign team to win in European games is simply down to the fact that many supporters have had a lifetime to develop reasons to 'hate' other clubs through regional rivalries, particular games or incidents down the years. When that club then comes up against some Johnny-foreigner team they don't know much about or have any reasons to dislike, then it is easier to support them.
But put Man U against Galatasaray and you can bet that most Leeds fans would side with Man U – just because they have more reason to *hate* the Turks.
