The date on my 22 year old Seamaster automatic has stopped advancing. Thoughts anyone?

Only wear it once a month? Or get it fixed by our favourite Scottish based servicer; Calibre.

Right I’ve had a missed call and now an email this morning from Mappin and Webb offering me an Air King.

I like the watch but if I was to buy it realistically I’d have to move on my Seamaster and Speedmaster to balance the books and there is my reluctance to immediately call them back, as they are watches I love.

so if any of you are interested in an Air King at retail I’ve got 24h to get back to them.

Kato I have a friend who wants an Air King, I’ll ask and get back to you – which model no?

However I made the massive mistake of trying on a no date Sub.  A watch I’d always considered boring, but in the flesh just works.  Massively taken by it and went straight on the list   I’d sell all my watches for that and maybe my wife too!

Very nice.   I think that’s the problem with the internet, it flattens and takes the life out of watches.  The Panerai Luminor I tried on sprang into life in a – obviously – big way.  I’m considering a second hand one now.

So, the verdict on the Air King, keep or not?

    Buy the Sub

    I’d go for the Sub.

Here’s the D1 diver I’m so happy with. As stated above, pictures don’t compare with real life; it’s so vividly legible.

I’m so used to my 50mm Suunto 7, I sometimes think the D1 is a bit small at 44mm! Then I tell myself I’m being silly:

That’s very nice.  I like the attention to detail that is the circles on the minute/hour hand aligning

@Kryton57 yeah it’s staying for the moment.  At least until I get to the top of the Sub list.  Haha

I love numbers/field/fliegers watches and the older Air King was my favourite Rolex but the new Air King = too many #5’s and it just doesn’t make sense to me to have minutes and the 3,6 & 9 hours.

The 3,6& 9 look really odd compared to the other numerals as well. Buy the sub.

I used to really like the AirKing.  Now the dial looks a bit cluttered to me.  I’m on ‘the list’ for a 40mm explorer or no date sub, hopefully for my 50th, which gives them 2 years to make one and decide to sell it to me.  Doubt I’m that patient though…

    I am too (explorer I)

I like the Air King. Granted I think the 369 is an odd look.  As for cluttered it’s only got a extra 0 compared to the old one and IMO looks more symmetrical for it

To make us all jealous, a friend has got a sea dweller, a date sub and an explorer 2 in the last eighteen months / two years from the one AD. He’d never bought one before the sea dweller but built up a rapport with one guy which seems to be working .

Not tying to be antagonistic but I’d love to understand why you lot are on the lists.  Granted YMMV and Rolex reputation, it’s an overly expensive buy from a company that’s kinda pushed its clientele near the edge with its self driven exclusivity, and there’s plenty of videos about with either QC issues, or mechanical gaps in capability not worthy of the equivalent gap in price.

So a genuine question, are they really that good, worth the money and a peak of horologoly for you all, and have i missed something?

I’m on the list because I tried the explorer on, on a whim, and really liked it so decided to buy one – it is being paid for with an inheritance too. I also like nice watches, they’re the only jewellery, bar a wedding ring, i wear.

At retail it won’t be that expensive and i’m not really fussed about concerns around self driven exclusivity, isn’t that more a limited production capacity v global demand rather than rationing supply. Lots of desirable things have wait lists, Mrs kilo waited about a year for a one of her road bikes to turn up from order to completion

I also have other nice watches and i’m not entirely sure it’ll actually replace my current rolex which has strong sentimental attachment for me , so the wait list doesn’t really bother me. My current rolex, i’ve owned for thirty plus years, it’s accurate, reliable, I worked hard to get it and I love wearing it. (I also drive crap cars, usually costing under 3k, have cheap motorbikes (although seem to have four of them now) don’t spend a fortune on clothes, not fussed about luxury holidays etc so watches are a bit of an exception for me.).

Perhaps strangely i’ve never got the love for Omega Seamsters.

To be honest Kryton,  I think mine is an itch that needs scratching and a 50th birthday present to myself seems as good a reason as I can think of.   People have a bit of history of ‘gifting’ themselves a Rolex for landmark birthdays, qualifications, achievements etc.  and as a ‘watch guy’  I feel I should at least try it out.

Will the watch be as good as my Omega’s? I can’t tell you.  I hope so.   I agree the potential customer service/experience stinks a bit, but for being over priced, I’m not sure they’re that bad at RRP if you look at the competition and they certainly retain the price if you do decide to move them on, should get what you paid back, which is more than can be said of other brands, although a lot of that is linked to the difficulty in obtaining one in the 1st place.

Interesting thanks.   Just the sudden flood of mentions intrigued me.   This comes right at the moment I’m still thinking about the Luminor having found some second hand ones, saving £1000 over new and wondering if the hit on the savings would ever be refilled if I had to sell it.  Then again,  new vs a 10+ yo watch for £1k seems worth it yet I don’t know enough about the model numbers / movements to understand why the high ish 2nd hand price.

So I was wondering if you chaps were “investing” to a degree or just had an interest, knew a Rolex “bargain”… or something else.

I’m not investing in watches.  I’m buying ‘stuff’’ I like.   I get the enjoyment out of them, and if I sell them, I’ll get what I get price wise.  I like a bargain and will look for the best option I can find when I’ve decided to buy, so rarely lose much money when I sell.

Yeah thanks.   I know watches shouldn’t be an investment in the main.   I get a bit too emotionally attached to mine, but that leads me to be thinking about a second hand Panaerai, enjoying it and maybe selling it on later – something I find hard to do and why I’ve now bought the Khaki king twice!

If that AERA had a date window I would buy one. It’s really nice.

Luming the brand name is genius.

The mention of Magrette watches a couple of pages ago has spurred me into action. I’ve got an Erebus Ascent on order and as I never wear it anymore I’m putting my Magrette up for sale. In this case, I’m going for N = N.

It’s an original Moana Pacific Professional and it’s in the classifieds now if anyone’s interested..

    @Kryton – if you squint it looks like a Panerai… 🙂

I’m on a list for watches I want basically because I refuse to pay over retail, and don’t want to feed the grey market kettle dealers.

if a Sub is 8k but the grey price is 10k, I’m happy to wait..

Christopher Ward just confirmed the repair on my c60 will be covered under warranty.  Should be back with me in… 10 WEEKS?!

In better news, Mrs BS just treated herself for getting a promotion.  From watch agnostic to this.  My work here is done.

Crikey, rather sooner than I expected I’ve had a call from an AD and have an appointment on Tuesday.   My brain is a whirlwind, Can I walk out without it? Does this mean culling my collection? If I keep them will I ever wear them again? Is it a step too far? Does it take the shine off the Seamaster? You only live once..? If I had to sell it, I wouldn’t lose on a second hand Luminor?

Not good to have the weekend to think on it for an overthinker… ?
