Anyone been running wider rims of say 28-30mm internal width with tyres up to 2.2/2.3 width? Does it work ok or does the tyre profile get all square or something daft?

Thinking of building wheels to cope with future proofing but only 2.3 tyres fit into the current frame.

    Cheers

been running a 2.3 Minion SS on a 35mm internal rim for 2 months/400 miles of mainly DH/Enduro tracks.

Being picky I’d have preferred it to be a 30mm internal rim but it is what it is (came spec’d on a full build)

i put a 2.3 minion ss on 29mm internal rim and took it off after 1 ride. way too square in that it ran on the side tread!

Maxxis are skinny tyres tho, a proper 2.3 by another brand might be fine.

That’s a helpful read, thank you Darrenspink. Looks like 30mm is the way forward.

Patriotpro – the SS works so well on the rear because of the square profile. This allows it to still drift incredibly predictably but gives those side knobs a really definite edge to rail when leant over. On my 35mm rim the 2.3 does however expose the sidewalls a little more than I’d ideally like. But it’s certainly not too square profile for my liking. it absolutely does not run on the edge when not leant over. For it to do so I can only guess you were running yours at too low pressure. Something you don’t really want with a tyre like the SS.

I run a 2.4 high roller and a 2.35 ardent race on a 30mm id rim. I really like it.

Been using some Halo Vapour 35’s (30mm internal) for about two years now with 2.4″ front (Chunky monkey) and 2.3″ rear (Specialized purgatory I think). No issues for me at all.

I’ve switched out the minion dhf 2.3 for a dhf 2.5 Wide Trail on 30mm rim.

It feels all round like the better tyre on that rim TBH.

Been using 2.35 Schwalbes (Magic Mary/ HAns Dampf) on 32mm internal id rims.  The tyres do look square, but they have been great over the winter.  They seem to be OK in current grippier conditions as well.

Very slight hijack – I am just about to press the button on 1x Maxxis Forekaster in 2.2″ for rear and a 2.35″ up front to fit onto 24.5mm internal width rims with a 29.5mm external width.

Now would this be all good to do so and what kinda profile would it give do you reckon?

Quite the opposite geex – i run it at about 35psi from memory.

I bet it was running on at least 90% of the tread which negates the advantage of the SS imo.

I use 25 mm rims for 2.35 inch rubber and 35 mm for 2.6 inch rubber (Magic Mary soft).

Both works great. Guess 30 mm would work for the 2.35 inch tyres as well.

Really faaaaantastic: the 2.6 inch tyres on those 35 rims.

I’m not trying to argue with you but mine doesn’t run on the edge at a similar pressure even on a 35mm rim. and I’m heavy (15st)
Running on all but the outer 15%ish sounds about right TBH. ie All but that contact area at the edge which makes contact when leant over.

I ran a 2.3 Purgatory (29) on a 30mm internal width rim and fount it draggy and little grip when leant over. You could really see the stretched shape. Replaced it with a 2.4 DHR II WT and the difference is incredible, it seems to roll as fast and have oodles of grip when leaning.

I run various 2.3 tyres on 31.8mm internal rims and my only issue was a couple of slits in the sidewalls on a trip to Spain (it was rocky) as the sidewall was a little proud of the knobs.  I have a Minion SS to go on too.  I would prefer to go wider rather than narrower than 2.3 really

only 2.3 tyres fit into the current frame.

Check a 2.3 on a wider rim is going to fit OK if it is already tight

HR2 and Minnion DHF 2.3 on 29mm rims here, can’t see any downsides compared to my old 23mm rims, should have done it ages ago.

It’s fine, i’m not sensing any argument geex. That image looks about right profile-wise which was near flat once my lard arse was on it.

The 2.4 (quoted sizes to be taken very lightly) Ardent I replaced it with is nigh on perfect, nice roundish profile and fast rolling.
