There was a Viking Saga type game on the original Spectrum that I really enjoyed, sort of RPG, then came the first version of Lounge Lizard Larry… we had loads of laughs with that one…not the gameplay but it was just so corny.

About the time I w3as playing Elite first (286 processor time folks) I was also playijng Starglidewr which was cool (then).

I remember that, was it Valhalla? You typed in commands, like ‘attack’ and stuff, and if you typed in a swear word, a woman came on and slapped your character round the face.

Kevevs, I remember buying Wizball for my C64 back in the mid 80s. Me and a mate played it for a few hours then told my mum this was the game we’d been developing over the past few weeks (me on the graphics, him on the coding, and another mate on the sound/music). She was so impressed that she invited a whole bunch of neighbours in from our street! I remember loads of people being crammed into my bedroom while we ‘showcased’ our ‘achievement’.

EDIT: I also remember Knightlore (got that on Xmas eve from a mate and we played it for days on end). Was a big fan of most Ultimate games; from the days of Jetpac and Lunar Jetman, through to Sabrewulf and Underwurlde. Much better on the Speccy than the C64.

I love a raceface games thread.

Some great overlooked titles mentioned already. TT on ps2, Beyond good and evil being great.

My addition would be Zero Tolerance on the Megadrive. Amazing for it’s time, system link cable or online play (no one I knew quite understood what the Internet was back then let alone play a megadrive online, or watch Segas pirate TV) the tension was huge. I’ve got a sega meganet megadrive modem…

Also probotector on the Super Nintendo. Good times.

I’m getting misty reading this thread. Still got my BBC model A (upgraded to a B and with a graphics extension chip…woo!), and Amiga in the attic.

Elite is of course the best game ever, but how about Chuckie Egg? Or indeed Yie Ar Kung Fu?

    Do you remember Castle Quest?

Can remember watching the video loop upstairs in Boots when it first came out (how sad!?). Then played it todeath on holiday.

One of the most addictive games ever:

Cast your minds back to 1983 … and laserdiscs …

Was it not something like 50p a go back then? For 3 lives? Spent a fortune on that in Worthing Pier arcade!

Not sure some of the games above are underrated!

    Boulderdash is a good call.

My current fav which is more down with the kids than the middle aged posse is Minecraft, no point to the game but utterly addictive.

    Unirally for the SNES

Stunt Race FX for the SNES

    1080 snowboarding for the n64

Citadel is great, but I think it’s widely known as a great BBC game. I’ve absolutely no idea whether it would be fun now after all the great puzzly adventure games that have come since. Games were just so unforgiving back then!

Good thread, but some people, come on! Under-rated != “games that everyone loved”.

You know who you are. Doom was a bad start, unless you actually preferred the n64 version, in which case you’re a deviant and we’ll let it stand.

I’m aware this is close to breaking my own rant/rules….

I was going to post Unirally on the Snes AlexSimon – it’s the precursor to all the Tony Hawk-style skateboarding/bmxing/snowboarding games.

I’ll go for Monuments of Mars instead. Kommander Keen owes it a debt.

    ****ing! Carrier Command!!!
Loved that game – played it to death. I remember trying to “uninstall” it from my Dad’s 286 PC and deleting C:\command.com

    That didn’t go down well.
