The retaining pin holding in the disc pads on my ultegra callipers had seized and I’ve had to drill them out. In the process I have slightly damaged the thread. The pin holds but does not fully tighten. I know there’s a little clip for backup but I was wondering if I can use a split pin instead of the the threaded axle/pin. Has anyone had any success with this approach? Does a split pin work? Anyone know what diameter pin is needed?
Or do I need to bite the bullet and try and find new calliper on eBay. They seem out of stock everywhere.

    Cheers

Split pin works fine. I got mine off some spare MTB brake pads so I’m afraid I don’t have the dimensions.

I had this on my 105 caliper and use a split pin. It’s been totally fine.

If you need to know the diameter, you could measure the bolt on the other brake? (Perhaps you were unlucky enough to have to drill both brakes). As above, I’ve used spare pins from other brake pads and these fit fine.

Yeap – had to drill both. Live and learn – something I will need to keep an eye on moving forward. I did an ok job on the the rear and a replacement pin slotted in ok. Front was harder to get out and I damaged the thread a little so will try split pin. Or might try a tap to clean the thread .

    Split pin probably best

    Drilled mine last Saturday!
Luckily there’s enough thread to use a bolt off some unused XT callipers. Why do they use that rubbish slotted head when the hex key has worked on XT forever.

If it’s any help, I Copperslipped mine after this came round last time… A split pin would be fine though.

Anyone got the sizes of split pin required as I have this same issue. The slotted bolt is utter garbage

They’re awful aren’t they, I replaced the ones on my DA callipers with the hex version from some XTs. The old 670(?) gen slx used to come with split pins but were drilled for the hex ones

Thanks all. I’ve replaced one with the XT Allen key head. The thread on the other only just holds and doesn’t fully tighten so I’ll try a split pint if I can find the correct size. Thanks all.

The slotted head pin is indeed pants

Another one here who had to drill them out and use a split pin! Don’t change the pads often enough!
