    Mr Pedant here. The line, originally in Grey’s Elegy, and used as a title for a novel by Thomas Hardy is Far from the madding crowd.

    I think you’ve missed the point. He’s not saying the crowd is madding, he’s saying they’re maddening, which is a different thing. Hence why he wrote it…
