For those of you who watch Archer, you will know that Krieger is a fan of Rush. I hadn’t clocked the fact before, but my son was laughing about it because I, too, am a huge fan.

That got me thinking though: there does seem to be a way of plotting characters with likes and interests that all fit together. So, for example, Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons in another one who would probably like Rush.

So, what is it that makes a “Rush listener”? I flipping love them, and think that the three members may be some of the best rock musicians the world has known. That said, I am not developing any pig-boy hybrids in my basement lab, or prone to making sarcastic remarks about other people’s failure to remember which issue of X-Men is which.

P.S. If you don’t really know what I’m asking, join the club. It has something to do with how bands and styles and sounds get pigeon-holed. I think.

Sadly disbanded now, although Roll the Bones was the last albumn I actually bought, didn’t appeal to me after that.

IIRC Krieger has exit stage left painted on his van….

A love of anime porn, unethical animal experiments and being a clone of Hitler? 😀

    I **** love Archer!

Charlenes the best though, I had a friend at school who laughed at people in exactly the same way she does.

I should love Rush but seem to have an allergic reaction whenever I hear them. I don’t like his voice much but still find my reaction rather odd.

This is often a thing which suprises me. I was in a restaurant at the weekend served by a polite demur waitress who was at least 20 years junior to me yet had a Rose tattoo on the inside of one arm, a gun on the opposite arm “Patience” across her wrist and I noticed a quote on the inside of her bicep which I thought I recognised.

I was surprised that someone of her age would be that passionate about and 80’s rock band she would not have grown up with to have indelibly recorded thier content on herself.

Quality musicians, some of the most technical players of thier time.

Maybe too technical for thier own good?

Handful of songs are “nod along songs” Spirit of Radio etc, the rest are too challenging to listen to unless you are stoned.

    🤷‍♂️🥴

In Working Man , Mr Lee complains about getting up at 7am and leaves for work at 9am. Let’s say he has a 30 minute commute. Later on we hear that he gets home at 5pm. This implies that he left work at the latest 4.30 pm .
Then the lazy git complains that “he’s working all the time”.
Some people need to get a hair cut and buck themselves up.

What about the voice of Geddy Lee
How did it get so high?

Yeah, it’s not like he’s working from 7 ’til 11 every night, like a real long haired rocker.

p.s. I reckon bikebouy has it right. Rush must be amazing when stoned 😀

    Body odour.
Complete mastery of the Rubik’s Cube.
    An attempted moustache.
A distinct lack of female company*.

    😉

Slightly more tolerable, but they’re no Hawkwind.
And the Ayn Rand worship is a bit dodgy.

    *Not you obviously, SR. 😀

If Geddy’s voice does it for you, I can highly recommend Pavlov’s Dog…..

I was reading an interview with one of the band recently, and the references to Ayn Rand aren’t really central to what the band’s about. Not sure if it’s still around, it was on Flipboard but if I can find it it gives a bit more detail.
I’ve only got one of their albums, Grace Under Pressure, and it’s not one that gets a lot of play. Rusty Spanner has beaten me to the Pavlov’s Dog link, I was going to mention them because I came across them before I heard of Rush, and I though Geddy was copying their singer’s voice. I have that album on vinyl, ‘At The Sound Of The Bell’, and ‘She Came Shining’ was my favourite track on it!

A band so much better than Rush that they’re not even on the same Page.
I get why people like Rush (to an extent) but I can’t stand them myself, Working Man is just about tolerable but only because it sounds like Sabbath.

I’ve read the recent interviews where they downplay the Ayn Rand influence. However, here’s some info re the 1978 NME interview they seem keen to gloss over:

Me too, I was given it by a friend in the 80’s after listening to and enjoying Rush. 🙂

A lot of friends are still really big fans and I still enjoy listening to them now and again, even 2112.
I try not to let an artist’s political leanings influence my appreciation of their art, but sometimes you just can’t help it.

Love rock music (esp Black Sabbath, Maiden, Motörhead, Priest, Dio, Rainbow, UFO) but never really got Rush personally.

Grew up with 70’s classic rock ..never liked Rush ..its Geddys voice ..f#$%in awful..in the same bracket as Jon Anderson..were they both castrated at birth?
My dislike for Yes is a little more clannish though ..as you either liked ELP or them in your teenage years at my school…you couldnt like both 😎
Edit : although I did go to see Yes at Newcastle City Hall on the ” Tales From A Topographic Ocean Tour ” ..quite easily the most boring gig I’ve ever attended.

Rush are the same age as me. I won tickets to their 30th anniversary tour on the Total Rock radio station. They were awesome. End story.

Actually, my brother is the big Rush fan in our family but I like them too. I managed to see them twice, and they were great both times. The second time we were about 10 rows from the front.

I saw them on the Show of Hands tour at Wembley Arena.

Signals is probably my fave album, mainly as it was probably the first one I listened to.

I always thought it was Cuz (cousin)(maybe that’s what you mean :0) ).
Wonder if there’s anyone who likes both bands in this ‘ere thread. Cos (cuz) I love one and can’t stand the other. That’s the type of listener I is.
