I have a plastic Stanley tool box with a removable tray and then what is just, basically, a plastic box. It was cheap, and about worth it… but it has driven me mad once too often – all my bike tools are in it and it spends a reasonable amount of time in the boot of my car, but does need to come out. It’s infuriating having to rummage around and basically empty it to get the tool I need which is, of course, always at the bottom.

I have been looking at smallish tool boxes with sliding drawers, and I think that’s the kind of thing I want – but does anyone have anything they would recommend for such a task.

I think the answer to this is generally Halfords Pro range (black) when on a heavily discounted offer deal.

Anything that might also be available outside the UK ?

I have a metal cantilever tool box for most of my bike tools. It reduces the amount of rummaging quite well.

Maybe you need a little compartment box for spares and consumables, and a tool roll for actual tools, everything in it’s place and a place for everything?

    Tool bag from Wilkos (honestly)

A bit wider than the plastic boxes so that stuff fits in better, and loads of pockets for frequently used stuff:

If they were £40, everybody would be raving about them…

The small Stanley boxes are shockingly poor quality IMHO.

If you’re frustrated at finding stuff then the bucket-like tool bags can be good – its not clear from the pic but there are pouches all around the inside of the bag so you can see the handles of everything and nothing ends up hidden then larger stuff can sit in the middle

I’d second the tool roll recommendation 👍 a decent one will be able to carry tools for 99% of bike maintenance tasks. Easy to store and great access to tools. Keep your existing box for lesser used tools.

After trying most boxes available we opted for one of the Aldi ones four years ago. Lifts from the garage to the camper and has pouches inside and out so everything is easily accessible
