I think what he was trying to say was that it’s a muslim country, not one where there are numerous internal rifts between religious groups. That said, there are 6 officially recognised religions but sadly, athiesm or agnosticism aren’t recognised (which may make it tough in a country where your ID card carries your religious affiliation) and blasphemy is illegal. Also its political system for a long time has hardly been a shining beacon of freedom.

He needs more balance. Why is the entire situation in the “Middle East” one gargantuan F-Up?

In other words what he’s trying to say is that religion doesn’t have to be the cause of “one gargantuan F-Up”. Which bears a striking resemblance to what I suggested.
