The Annual Running thread – beginners/ultras/whatever

Connected treadmills always seem a bit pointless as Zwift etc can’t alter speed (maybe incline occasionally).
Cheap Bluetooth footpod more useful, or the cut down Stryd.
trail_ratFree MemberI tried a sufferfest running video the other night. It was pretty shite actually.
I ended up just watching the Moto GP. Last Night on the treadmill
After doing dark dark place sufferfest on the watt bike which was a good hard effort and the music/footage worked well.
I just don’t think running footage lends it’s self well to that type of work out. Too many words to be read as it’s never clear from the footage what kind of effort they are putting in as the good lads make the running all look easy.
I’m more likely to try doing a cycling sufferfest work out on the treadmill next time than use the running ones.
trail_ratFree MemberAlso noticed my 735xt if you tell it your running indoor accrues distance from stride length and I guess the step counter module ? –its certainly not just picking it up from the treadmill as it’s reading slightly less than the treadmill.
My mates fenix 3 doesn’t have the ability to tell it your doing a treadmill run so it just tries constantly to get a GPS lock and ends up giving no useful distance data.
matt_outandaboutFull MemberA huge thank you.
Because if this thread, I’ve just run 10k for the first time ever….
<span style=”font-size: 0.8rem;”>I went for a run this morning, aiming to run a slightly longer than my usual route that’s 5-6km. And just kept going.</span>

I’m off to flex my buffness at mrs_oab, and probably get short shift as she’s run a few 10k’s…
wallopFull MemberBloody great – I bet you are well chuffed! What a brilliant way to spend a Sunday.
northshoreniallFull MemberTrail_rat, the fenix 3 has an indoor run function and just estimates distance on data from outside stuff and step counter. Mine usually drifting a bit on distance but think that’s due to me running differently outdoors.
If pick indoor run it doesn’t attempt GPS lock at all.
lungeFull MemberWell that was unexpected, throwing down with rain, cold, grim and a horrible headwind on the way home. But somehow I seem to have got a 6 minute PB at the Birmingham half with a fairly respectable 1:40. It once again reinforced that I love running in the rain and the cold, I really, really enjoyed that.
r8jimbob88Free MemberAfter having another crack at running again I think I’m finally getting my head around it!
I started slowly back in August and was determined not to get injured. A month later my left shin was beginning to hurt and my right knee was killing me! I’d started slowly but neglected to do any kind of stretching / foam rolling (something that I’d done all year throughout bike race season).
I eventually reaquainted myself with my sports maseuse that I hadn’t seen for a few months and as expected…. mild shin splints and tight IT band ☹️ I couldn’t run for more than a few minutes without having to stop.
So for the last few weeks I’ve had a love / hate relationship with my foam roller and given myself some daily TLC. My pain has reduced by about 80% and continues to improve.
I’ve also headed off road into the Peak District to run some of the trails and I’m loving it. I find it much more interesting than the roads and it seems to be much easier on my legs and knees. There’s so many more trails to explore compared to riding.
FlaperonFull MemberPissed through at the York 10 mile today. Great course, set new PB of 1:04 for the 10 mile despite the rain.
<span style=”font-size: 0.8rem;”>Would have been 30 seconds faster if I hadn’t taken a drink in the last 2 miles and given myself a massive stitch. First time I’ve had a stitch since school. </span>
Excellent course though. Would like to be sub-60 mins next time.
trail_ratFree Membernorthshoreniall , we couldnt find it in my mates fenix 3 last night – its not in the menus like it is in my 735xt – nor is is it in the *activities settings / add activity profile* settings .
he did buy it used so possibly someones been messign with it prior to his getting it.
stoxFree MemberWell done Flaperon … I ran the marathon today and I’m still drying out! So much rain 🙂
quite enjoyed the rain to run in … at least it wasn’t windy!
northshoreniallFull MemberTrail_Rat:
Settings – Apps – then add/ remove/ reposition them from there. If not in there may need connect to computer and Garmin connect to add it in but it should be on the device as a core activity/ App. My Fenix 3 was 2nd hand and just did default reset type thing and it was in there automatically.
Hope that makes sense?
deadlydarcyFree MemberI’d promised my boy I’d take him for his second junior parkrun today. Woke up and it was hammering down and a bit cold in Bristol. But he came down the stairs shortly afterwards more or less saying, “Rain? Who cares?”
So off we set – but the time we parked up it had got even heavier but he insisted on it. I threw on a waterproof while he whinged about wearing his. So off that came too. Went off like a train trying to keep up with the faster kids so had to take a bit of a walk for a few seconds around 0.5k but he took off again, high-fiving the marshalls at each turn.
A few more short breaks to get his puff back but he went for it big style in awful conditions finishing his 2k in 12.43, 1.17 faster than last week. I couldn’t be more proud. It should be the dad saying “don’t ditch because of the rain son”, not the other way round right? 😀
NobeerinthefridgeFree MemberI’ve never seen the point of treadmills really, apart from on an oil rig/ship, and the likes of a lass I work with who lives on a farm, nae street lights etc and she doesn’t fancy running herself in the middle of nowhere.
I can see the turbo working, when it’s minging outside, saves washing kit and bike, wear on drivetrain etc, roads in the dark, and is a more direct use of time – no faff etc. It’s also mildly similar to pedalling on a bike.
Treadmills? just go out and run, worst case is wet feet, and running on a treadmill is nothing like actually running, it’s only bouncing on the spot. Used to work with a guy that went to the gym and did 10 miles on the treadmill, 3 times a week. Managed to get him to run the 2 miles to the gym. He walked home, gubbed.
alanfFree MemberNobeer – unless it’s really icy or 3 feet deep in snow and you’re training for an imminent race, in which case going out could result in injury, or you just wouldn’t get the training you wanted. Other than that though – perhaps just going out for a run is the way to go.
I don’t use a treadmill, instead opt for the just going out approach. A treadmill may have been useful in March when we had the snow/ice, but I managed a few cross country runs in the snow and did a mad session under Tinsley viaduct for a long run I had planned (24 miles – 48 lengths!!). There was no snow or ice under the bridge.
This weekend has been mainly affected by the weather – Saturdays gruesome twosome half was cancelled and replaced with a 10K instead due to the high winds. However, it was a balmy 24 degrees and sunny. Sunday, SY cross country was a wet affair with a max of 8 degrees.
FlaperonFull Memberrunning on a treadmill is nothing like actually running, it’s only bouncing on the spot.
-26 outside will see me on a treadmill. To be fair I use them fairly often in hotels where I’m pushed for time or it’s dark outside, but rarely for more than 5k.
Paired with a Stryd you can get really consistent training done.
trail_ratFree Memberjust did 10k on the one here this morning. Was almost as exciting as watching them trip drill pipe.
as mentioned earlier in thread necessary evil as its a bit frowned upon to run out side here .
mogrimFull Memberrunning on a treadmill is nothing like actually running, it’s only bouncing on the spot.
Rubbish, I did most of my interval and tempo runs while training for my first marathon on one and it was fine. I prefer running outdoors, but at the time the treadmill in the gym next door to work was far more convenient.
MSPFull MemberPaired with a Stryd you can get really consistent training done.
I have been looking at the stryd units, are they as useful as a cycling power meter for training, do they fully understand varying terrain and going uphill?
Ro5eyFree MemberObstacle Course Racing World Champs this coming weekend in sunny Brentwood and the course map has been published…. 100 obstacles over 15km,
Some of the obstacles are super technical “rigs” …. more like ninja obstacles !!
Not sure that there will be many age groupers left, me included, still wearing their bands at the end (if you can’t complete an obstacle, refs cut off your rubber wrist band and you will not be able to podium)…. makes me glad I’ve only 5 mins to travel to the site and have not come half way around the world like some… There are people coming from Europe, States, Canada but also Oz, New Zealand, Argentina and Peru !! …. Seems rather harsh that “official” many will not complete the course having travel so far and paid so much ??
And in other news
The lad, just 8, took almost a minute of his Parkrun time … 28:07 … over a hilly 5kms… (winner was 18:XX).
I don’t push him, just ask him if he fancies it on a saturday morning once in a while. Then when running I let him set the pace (he’ll not stop or walk) and only ask him who he’s going to chase down in the last 500m
FlaperonFull MemberYep. Power is a bit of a misnomer, it’s a derivative of acceleration corrected for weight and power just happens to be the metric chosen.
However, it does mean that you can be incredibly consistent with effort levels in a race. I know that my target power for 10 miles is 260w, so I stuck to it like glue. On reflection I could have gone for 265w, but not more. It’ll generate target powers for 10k and 13.1 miles, but not 10 miles, so I guessed at bit.
You end up behind the pack at the start and then you gradually reel them in. Uphill tends to be noticeably slower pace than you would normally expect, then you more or less sprint down the other side.
The accuracy is uncanny – I tested mine on a 400m track and after 4 laps at different paces it was less than 5m out. Better than GPS.
firestarterFree MemberJust done my first proper trail run as I have a trail half on Sunday. Got bitten by a lab on the thigh, deep joy. I slowed to almost walking the owner had hold of it as i approached then it just leapt and grabbed me. Worse bit I was only a mile in and had 6 to go. Felt and looked worse initially with it bleeding but it looks alright now just a bit swollen and sore, run was ace though apart from that
matt_outandaboutFull MemberThat’s unacceptable from the dog and owner. Quite literally, what if that is a child next time?
NobeerinthefridgeFree MemberAye, shocking, just because a dog is being held, would make you think the owner has control. I’ll bet it’s not the first time it’s done that. Probably the reason owners grabbed a hold of it.
Well done going on and finishing, worth getting bite checked out though, you don’t want an infection.
firestarterFree MemberYeah I figured she had control of it glad i had slowed down. Im smeared in savlon but I’ll keep an eye on it.
But apart from that loved running on trails I’ve only ever ridden on, looking forward to my half
SpinFree MemberToday I ran up the amusingly named Turtlehead Peak above Last Vegas. The search is now on for a Mount Moleatthecounter.
matt_outandaboutFull MemberTalk to me about shoes again.
I bought some Brooks Cascadia’s cheap on Start Fitness and they are brilliant. I think my feet that for two decades have been very Salomon and Adidas are widening – especially in forefoot.
Brooks are chuffing pricey though.
What else is the narrowish rear and wider forefoot, available in waterproof flavour and a bit less disco slipper?… And under £60/70…
duckmanFull MemberBrooks are very, very good though.I quite liked Mizunos as well, and I have wide feet.
lungeFull MemberNike for me, the Pegasus fit my feet which sound similar to yours.
mikertroidFree MemberAccidentally did a half marathon yesterday as the forest (Billund, Denmark) was a bit further away than I thought! I positively HATE running, but sometimes it’s handy when I’m away.
My feet end up in pieces though, what good shoes to recommend?
NobeerinthefridgeFree MemberSomething light and comfy, some swear by getting fitted properly by a shop, some say it’s bullshit. I reckon some folk have such exaggerated running styles that it can be worth it for them, if your getting bother, could be of use to you too.
