Asked a whole bunch of questions before Christmas – thanks for all the help!

I made a simple jewellery/trinket box for my girlfriend for Christmas (her initials are MB)

And this desk lamp, with a plywood body and cement base

Pretty happy with both!

Cool is the shade made from ply as Well?

Yup, single sheet of 0.4mm ply.

How did you bend the plywood?

There’s a chap working in newcastle who makes lamps very like that but about 7 foot tall. Like it!

I get how to bend the plywood for the upright, but how did you do it for the shade?

Some pics of making the lamp;

Mold for concrete, with embedded bolts – leaving length exposed to put nuts on

Glueing the lamp shade. Masking tape to try pull it vaguely circular (not overly successful)

Glueing the main body, while clamped around mold. 5x 2mm sheets of ply, with a layer on either side to protect from the clamps.

Disk glued into lampshade to give rigidity and a glueing surface

Nice work op. Enjoy the ‘making-of’ pictures, and like the home solutions to clamping pressure… Looks a balancing act. 🙂

Nice lamp, it might be worth getting one of the LED bulbs that IKEA,etc sell. They give out no heat at all (you can touch the glass with your fingers which feels a bit weird after growing up with incandescent bulbs), so would prevent the wood discolouring due to heat.

alexsimon – thin ply was tricky to get hold of, ended up getting it from a model shop.

hs125 – had a couple attempts at making the base – I initially used a normal cement/aggregate mix, which turned out way too crumby/didn’t set quick enough. Changed to quick set cement (no aggregate) – which is perfect for this kind of thing! Only other hiccough was dropping the lampshade and chipping the edge, so had to do a bit of glueing/sanding. Was my first try at laminating and it worked out pretty well which I was happy about!

doof doof – indeed, pretty similar, I did actually design this one before I first saw those lamps!

Love the lamp OP. How did you round off the concrete?

Metal file and sand paper! It is pretty easy to work with. Then coat of diluted PVA to seal it.

I thought it was this chap but I can’t find the exact thing I’m thinking of on his site he makes some similar though so it may be that it was a one off in his studio or it might have been one of the other guys in Ouseburn.
