I need to pay some cheques in and have worked out an off road route to my nearest town. I don’t really want to carry a lock so wondered if I can just wheel the bike in. It’s a fairly large Nationwide.

    have you tried asking?

Guess it depends if you can afford the time to cycle back home to get your lock

I mean without knowing if it’s your local branch no one will know the answer.

    It’s not policy

You can post cheques in, so unless you’re desperate, do that and go and enjoy a nice ride somewhere else.

I once saw Greg Lemond riding out through the doors of a bank in Vail on a BMX, so it is possible!

Take out a Starling account ,take a photo and they are paid in. Then transfer.

I’ve done it with NatWest. Sainsbury’s Local too. If it’s not getting in the way I can’t see anyone making a fuss.

Often roll my bike into a shop. Do it brazenly and people tend to clock that it’s not just-another-bike and let you get away with it.

Oddly there is a bike shop (the closest one to me in town) that doesn’t let you bring your bike inside unless you have an appointment…. Even if you want to show them something on the bike, for that you need an appointment.

Needles to say I don’t go there.

You can pay cheques into most Bank accounts at the Post Office (not everyone knows this), I can’t tell you if your local PO will allow you to take a bike in or not, but it might be closer than your Bank branch

Pretty standard here during lockdown, and even now my local LBS is workshop by appointment only and limited number of people in the store at one time. Seems sensible to me.

Why? Seems like it’d solve all your problems if you did

You can pay cheques into most Bank accounts at the Post Office (not everyone knows this),

You can pay cheques in on most banking apps on your phone too. My mind was like quite literally blown when I found this out on my Lloyds app.

I can not believe you can pay cheques in on the Lloyds banking app! 🤯

How long has that been about?!

Should be a 30mile round trip, so would rather not lug a lock round with me.

Sounds like I’ll be ok taking it in from most of the replies.

I quite often take my kick scooter into the bank, a quite small Nationwide. The scooter is 12″ wheels, so not too big. So long as its muddy and you can park it out of the way, I think its fine.

Unfortunately Nationwide don’t let you pay in cheques with the app, or at a post office.
Some ATMs will let you pay in cheques, so might be able to do that without actually going into the bank.

I was escorted out of a shopping centre with my MTB once. I wasn’t even riding it

Pay cheque in with app on phone.
    Ride bike somewhere fun.

I got kicked out of a shopping centre once for wheeling a Brompton – when I offered (politely) to fold it and carry it I was told to just lock it outside.

On the flip side I’ve taken my road bike in for plenty of different Shops. 90% been fine with it.

    I’d say risk it.

I’ve done it in the past in a Bank of Scotland (but it was about 12 years ago!)…they were quite happy for me to bring the bike in but it was clean and the branch wasn’t very busy at that time (got there as the bank opened – was a main branch in the middle of the high street).

I chanced my arm, but I had been in the bank a few times the week before so I was recognised. Suspect it wouldn’t really be an issue just now given how quiet I think the branch is likely to be…assuming they have a bit of space in the branch.

Call them and double check…if they say no, ask how to close all your accounts (and still get told no as that would be a d**k move).

You might be ok, but what if they say “no”? Are you going to tell them that some random strangers on the internet said it was ok. Surely carrying a lock in a backpack beat the crap out of possibly having to ride home to get a lock. I’ve been kicked out of a shopping center for pushing a bike through because I didn’t have a lock and wanted to nip in and buy an icecream.

If you have a card for the account you can use the external Nationwide cash point to deposit cheques so wouldn’t need to get off the bike!

It amazes me that people ask these sort of questions on a online social media platform rather than with the company in question directly, expecting the responses given to be fact.

Its a facepalm moment everytime I see people ask.

Maybe ask the company themselves or just do it and see what happens?

Dunno about you but the only way I can contact my local bank is to walk in and speak to someone. Which defeats the point of asking them in the first place does it not?

I would do it providing that the bike is not muddy.

I wouldn’t leave my bike unattended in a public space for even a second. No matter what lock is on it.

Do what commuters do. But a shit-heap to get you to the shops/bank and keep your ‘real’ bike at home.

Then you don’t even need to carry the weight of a D-Lock, just some £5 Halfords cable crap.

When it gets nicked on the first or second trip, just go to the local recycling place (tip? dump?) and get a free replacement.

I don’t know about other banking apps but Barclays have a £1000 limit on paying in cheques.

And I can confirm that Cockermouth Post Office didn’t say anything when I wheeled my bike in.

****ts. It’s easier to get forgiveness than permission though, I’d have just brazened it out.

“I’ve been a customer of your bank for years, here I am trying to do my bit for the environment and cycle in and you won’t even let me put my bike in the corner for 5 minutes. I’m switching my account to Triodos!” etc.

Good for you for wanting to cycle 30 miles and back to the bank by the way 🙂

I struggle to see how you could transmit Covid-19 via your bike unless you encouraged other people to lick it or something.

TBH Nationwide are very old school, I’m not sure you can even pay it into a post office with them.

I’m sure they won’t mind if it’s a clean bike, but you never know.

You can post cheques to their admin centre to pay in and sometimes they have ATMs that accept cheques.

Sadly no pay by app though.

Took my bike into HSBC on Leeds city centre once. Was told to get out as not allowed bikes in there.

    Made no sense.

Well, I finally got around to riding to the bank today and was prevented from entering. Did manage to pay the cheques into the ATM so not a wasted journey.
