Whether the ECHR withdrawal is at all relevant or possible post-ruling hardly matters.

Well it does, because tomorrow’s headlines in the Sun, Daily Mail, Express, etc, were supposed be along the lines of “Braverman Calls For The UK To Leave The ECHR”.

She has been robbed of her rallying call, they have stolen her thunder. This will not help her.

The usual idiots are already filling the airwaves with various hysterical and incoherent calls…..

I prefer to listen to Capital/70s or R4

Sunak says he will pass emergency law saying Rwanda is safe country, and won’t let ECHR block deportation flightsRishi Sunak starts by saying he does not agree with the supreme court decision, but he “accepts it and respects it”.

He says the rule of law is fundamental in this country.

The government will agree a new treaty with Rwanda, he says.

But he says he will introduce emergency legislation. This will assert that Rwanda is safe, he says.

(This is the Boris Johnson plan – see 4.07pm.)

And Sunak goes further. He says, once this legislation is passed, he will not let the European court of human rights stop flights to Rwanda.

More magical thinking.  this will not survive its first contact with reality I am sure

Since when has the headline in the Daily Mail had any contact with reality or facts? I wouldn’t put it past them to still insist that leaving the ECHR would be the right message to send to the lefty woke judiciary. The focus may be slightly different, but it will still be a Suella rallying call to take back control of our laws/borders etc.

A fine piece of magical thinking from Johnson

The government has the power, under Schedule 3 of the Asylum and Immigration Act 2004, to ask parliament to deem Rwanda a safe country. That has not so far been done and it should now be done – immediately.

As if that would make the slightest difference to our obligations under international law. You can call a cat Rover and put it in a kennel but its still a cat

Well, he’s announced that this is exactly what he’s going to do. Emergency legislation

    More magical thinking.

Indeed. It’s the UK courts that will stop the deportation of asylum seekers, not the ECHR. But that lie could be made to stick… but I doubt Sunak is the man to do that… unless the papers really take it and run with it for a long period of time.

As for simply declaring in law that Rwanda is a safe country… utterly meaningless.

I recall watching TV the day after the brexit vote.  It was all political editorial stuff,  what would this mean for the country/ Cameron/ johndon/ tory party and so on.   One great question asked by Marr or Peston or similar was ‘what will the tory party look like,  its always been divided on Europe and now the serving pm has lost a referendum on it?’ The panel included various past mps….redwood…. Clarke and others.  Clarke was sure the party would soon unite behind a new leader,  he agreed Europe had always been divisive but was sure the best thing about the tories was their ability to put the party first,  to come together and stay in power.

Hahhshahahahahshaaha!  They may have clung to power but the show off togetherness we’ve had since that brexit vote and the possibility they will fracture into a hard right party and a…. don’t know what to stand for but we are centre right party,  this is going to run and run!

As a talking head on the news has just pointed out, legislation to change the law is one thing, legislation to change the facts is insane.

You can’t legislate to make Rwanda safe when all the experts say it isn’t. It’s like legislating that black is now white.

If she were still Home Secretary, doubtless a bill to make pranking carry a prison sentence would be rushed through Parliament.

She seems to be busy trying to reinvent herself.
Private eye had a story about her being the surprise prize giver at the Political cartoon of the year awards.
Needless to say she seems to not have gone down overly well.

Thanks @martinhutch I’ve been going to bed instead of watching Last Leg as it had got a bit repetitive, however, well worth staying up for. I can’t believe they pulled something like that off, we need to spread it far and wide!

I’d have thought her klan/advisors might have alerted her to the fact that the boat was a dinghy.

Beautifully done but a missed opportunity!

Id have paid good money to have seen them hand her a gold painted cock and balls similar to the pic on the screen!

I honestly think she wouldn’t have realised for a few seconds and those few precious seconds would have been utterly priceless. Priceless!😁

    “That’s going to go viral…”

    Indeed it is 😀

But perhaps most scary it illustrates the lack of critical thought from those around her, what if it hadn’t just been two well spoken pranksters?

The whole thing perhaps suggests that all you need if you want to get stood next to a culture war bit hitter, is present like a young Tory…

    “That’s going to go viral…”

    She said that straight away.

She’s clearly not as stupid as some people think.

You don’t have to be a genius to work out a spoof will be on twitter. What her comment does show is that she is all about image and ‘media moments’She didn’t show much shock at the underlying assertion did she (i.e. she knows she’s a dick).

From what I’ve read in “Johnson at number ten” she was Dominic Cumming’s useful idiot in that she had the qualifications (just!) to become Attorney General without either the ethics to resign when she knew they were going to break the law or the ability to understand that they were going to break the law, or maybe a combination of both.

I think that there’s a tendency amongst people who become MPs to think that they’re somehow special, and when they get elevated like that, it’s much easier for them to believe that it is because they’re special. The alternative would be quite bruising to their already fragile ego.

She said it unaided. The woman can think on her feet.

I’m with Ernie on this: however stupid you may think Suella (or any other politician is), to get to minister level requires a certain amount of smarts and cunning. Like all of us she’s got her blind spots, and she’s clearly got pretty crap advisors if she ended up getting pranked like that. But I’m pretty sure if someone set out to prank me, they’d get me in the end.

    I’m with Ernie on this

To clarify it was said tongue in cheek, although I don’t actually think that she is quite stupid as some people believe she is.

But I wouldn’t use her awareness of the very self-evident fact that the prank would go viral as proof!

As this most sublime prank happened 10 minutes from my front door, I am agrieved to have missed seeing it first hand. Also, has it actually gone viral? I haven’t seen much exposure really, how big has it gone?

^^I suspect it will be a slow burner as much as anything.

It’ll follow her political career and whatever grift she gets upto after that.

Everytime she tweets, it’ll be posted… forever basically.

In all honestly though, it’s her deeds that should keep her awake at night and haunt her career.

…but I’m not seeing that happening so little wins like this will have to do.

    https://www.jewishnews.co.uk/braverman-criticises-absurd-claims-that-israel-has-been-withholding-gaza-aid/

The suggestion itself is absurd and, frankly, an insult to Israel who have been going above and beyond the necessary requirements to ensure that civilian casualties are limited, to ensure that aid is received onto the Gaza Strip and distributed.”

She continued:”I have seen evidence myself, in terms of very up-to-date photographic evidence, of plentiful food packages and trucks of food, water and medicines getting to the people of Gaza.”

So according to Suella Braverman the United Nations and a multitude of aid agencies are all  wrong because she has seen photographs of food packages and trucks with food.

Perhaps someone should show these photographs to the United Nations.
