I’ve always used regular cassette hubs with spacers on my singlespeeds (Hope XC, Pro2, King), but between knackered pawls on Hope and axle wear & crap seals on King, I’m looking around for a better way.

I’ve never tried a singlespeed specific hub & wondering if this is the way forward. Perhaps a Hope SS hub, but then I’m still concerned about Hope reliability. Maybe something like a Paul Components WORD with a separate freewheel (WI?). Any thoughts? Or perhaps a cassette hub with a reputation for reliability…DT240?

It needs to be as reliable as possible, but in particular not the kind of design that’s likely to leave me stranded (this bike is used mainly on long single & multi-day rides/races). Oh, and also not crazy heavy. Moon on a stick? 😀

    DT do/did a SS 240 cassette hub.

    WI freewheel FTW.

DMR hubs come out of the same factory as On-One hubs and the axles are interchangeable. Some time ago a friend wanted to convert his On-One to bolt up so we swapped axles. Seemples.

Jonathan from Strada recommended the SS Goldtec hubs to me, but I went with Chris King hubs in the end, but i’ve put more miles on my original SS hope hub, with no problems once i bought the proper seal seating tool, although the shell did crack after 3k miles ish. not the lightest i admit. cant offer any experience of freewheel types, but heard a good things about the White Industries

Hi Chris, thanks. Goldtec looks interesting though not a lot of info out there about them from owners. My King has needed more maintenance than I’d have hoped, and is currently looking at needing a new axle. I also seem to be knackering Hope pawls lately. Been chatting to JRA about a Paul WORD + WI freewheel combo, which looks like a good mix of simplicity, low weight, bling & reasonable price. The guys at JRA are ace too…right now they’re testing out the fit of a Racing Ralph tyre on an Arch EX rim for me to check if it’s as tight as on the new Crest.
