We will be in touch
For info more than anything, i have a 456ss and on the whole i really enjoy it, however at times it just does my head in, its hard to put in words, but lately i have been toying with changing for something steeper.
Now i havent got £ to waste and the sizing on the ss is comfortable and dont wont to loose that so the standard 456 is tempting and with used frames going for tbh silly amounts really on ebay i could always sell it back on.
But to the point has anyone owned both and what opinions did you have of each.
I've got a 456ss and know what you mean. Its great pointing down but the rest of the time can be a bit of a chore. Just bought a P7 but not sure if I'd sell the SS, on the right trail it can give a huge grin! 😀
Was a bit like this with my SS but lucky enough to have u-turn forks.
Run it all the time at 110mm now and love it for everything.
Suppose if you were a bigger hitter than me on the downhill bits then winding the forks back out would be a good idea, but for me this travel is perfect.
It surely won't help but...
I've ridden my SS with Manitou Blacks 100/120mm and it felt (looked?) wrong. Much better with Nixons 140mm. The best and current set-up though is with a rigid CF fork by On-One and a 29-er wheel.
Agree with dangerous beans, 110mm up front for normal riding feels right. I have 140mm U Turn Revs on a standard 09 456 and if you fully extend them for anything other than fast long descents, it feels too short and very high at the front.
i have u-turns and the bike spends its life at 120mm which to me is just right with this bike, dropping to 95mm on only the longest of climbs, but rarely ever see's 140 anymore.
i think the trouble is i have had a long list of issuse since day one with the bike, all parts were brand new for the build, but had problems, 2 bb's in a month (1 faulty straight from box the other crap), and a xt m775 rear brake that is testing my patience to the limits, sticky piston constantly needing bleeding, whereas the front has been flawless, head set has never been right, even though all of the above were professional fitted, aswell as other little issues that have just cloudy the experience.
But tbh i think the main problem is i have spent so much time on the Genesis IO ss and i just love it, i can happily ride anything i can with the 456 albeit slower with a rigid fork, and on the whole just seem to get more statisfaction from it, which is making me toy with the idea of a change, or maybe put the thing on a diet.
Thats half the reason i was wondering if anyone has had both and which they prefered, did they swap back even.
I had a Summer Season for a very short time and found it to be too slack for me. I believe that the standard 456 is a better all rounder for XC use IMO.
thats the thing, i'm after a better all rounder. i'll be honest i bought the ss from the very first batch, but didnt get to build it for several months due to other things, and if i'm honest the price was the killer
