Small pumps

Small enough to carry but not so small as it would take 100 pumps per tyre…

Just treated myself to a new track pump (Joe Blow Mountain X) and realised I have no idea where my little pump has gone either. No doubt will surface once I’ve bought a new one!

What’s good and not silly priced? Prefer a small pump to have a screw on for the valves, not a push on/ clip on.

OneUp is fantastic. But it’s push on. I bought one after borrowing one trailside and being blown (pin untended) away by how well it works.

Silca do a couple of good ones – I’ve got a Gravelero which is slightly larger than some but can be carried in a jersey, just. Or clips on with a mount by the bottle cage. They also do an Impero which is smaller but less volume…

Both very expensive though.

The problem with the push on / lock on type is the kid’s BMX’s have more than average spokes, so it’s hard to use a push on, I prefer the screw on valve adaptors.

Some of the “micro” pumps just seem utterly useless for shifting air.

Ah. OneUp only fits presta anyway.

Topeak Race Rocket MT

Inflates quicker than it has any right to for it’s size. Screw on

When my mates have used it they’ve said how good it is too

I’m a fan of Lezyne, just decide if you need the high volume (off road) or high pressure version (road)

Originally picked up a OneUp and while it is an excellent pump, I found I struggle to keep a push on pump steady while pumping so end up flexing the valve stem more than I like.

The race rocket MT has a proper screw on bendy tube.

Screw on pumps can unscrew a tubless valve core which is a major PITA

Birzman do a decent mini pump with a quick release valve. I’ve had two, lost them both mind.

I can’t get the link to work but Birzman Infinite Apogee Mountain. Can also use a CO2 cartridge with the hose.

I’ve used a race rocket on all my bikepacking trips and for my road rides. Still going strong after many years and works as well on my 29×2.6 tyres as my 32c’s. I do run tubes though.

I’ve got a whole load, built up over the years. Prefer screw-on to push-on.

Cheaper ones are better IMO. The Topeak and Lezyne ones are a good size and push air in at a decent enough rate, but have a bad habit of not only removing valve cores but also – from time to time – refusing to let go of the head of the valve core, which is disastrous.

Best ones I have – a cheapo from Decathlon (like this: https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/mountainbike-hand-pump-black/_/R-p-306754?mc=8543432&c=black) that just fits into my small Evoc hip pack, doesn’t eat valve cores and puts in air at a ridiculously high rate, and a small French supermarket-looking effort that Mrs Tyred found lying on the ground at the top of Mt Ventoux years ago that’s still going strong.

The Decathlon one was a short-notice emergency purchase for one of the kids, but it’s a brilliant piece of kit. If it was 5cm shorter it’d be a total winner.

Yes, it needs like 200 pumps per tyre (maybe more, seriously) but cos it’s such low volume you just get a good grip on it and pump like a madman and it’s surprisingly low effort. Yes, you’ll look like you’re furiously pleasuring yourself whilst you go at it, but everyone that I’ve lent it to on rides etc has been surprised by the effectiveness.

I’ve been through a few and after a couple of seasons everything has worn out with the exception of my Silca Tattico. Topeak, Halfords, Fabric, SKS – all of them gave up the ghost.

It’s ridiculously expensive for a pump but I’ve not had to replace it so it’s paid for itself. It isn’t screw on, but it does have a hose that clips on and the head is small so it’ll work for the BMXs and it does both schraeder and presta.
