Should they work out of the box, in your hand?
Got a new Altus 315 8 spd shifter for the lads bike but the gear indicator seems bust.
Do they magically work when fitted with cable tension etc?
It seems loose and mainly doesnt move when clicking through the gears, even when simulating the cable pull manually.
I can get it working if i rotate it 90 degrees and let gravity help it down to #8 but cant see that working on the bike.
I can send it back but dont want to look a twit if they all do that until fitted?
    Thanks

as i rmember, there is one tiny screw that holds the indicator on, take that out and you can remove it. theres a sliding pin that pushes the indicator up and i cnat remember if its spring loaded return or not.. pretty easy to diagnose regardless

No idea about Altus but on XT 9 speed it moves about as you click through the gears with no cable in it

You have to pull the cable to get them to work.
