I look after bikes for a friend’s children. One of the bikes is an old 26″ Orange P7 that has a Fox fork that has started leaking oil from the DS leg.

Its a Fox 32 that is marked ‘RL’ and ‘open bath’. My friend is a single mum anf cant afford to replace/send to the LBS, so what will i need to service it?

Any advice or links greatly appreciated.

Im pretty happy servicing RS forks and seals etc, but just need a guide for these ageing forks so i can get the lad riding again.

    Thanks

    Ian

Does it have a serial number which you can enter on this website? https://www.ridefox.com/fox17/help.php?m=bike

That should tell you everything you need to know or at least be a good starting point.

I cant see a serial number anywhere. Its not obvious like it is on the RS forks

Ah ok, from that Fox link above it seems like the serial number is under the crown arch. I shall go and have a look.

Seal kit, oil(s) and grease. Plus the necessary tools.

eBay will be cheaper than the likes of TFTuned.

Does the open bath make any difference? As its the damper side im assuming its losing damper oil?

    Vanilla or Float?

The vanilla is super easy to service if you can get seals still.  I’ve got a 2007 one that’s still going.

The tricky bit is getting the top caps out as they’ve got quite shallow flats for the spanner/socket.  They need care.

Motorbike suspension oil from Halfords in my damper.  10wt not 7.5wt in my case as I’m heavier and it was easier to get. 😉

@garage-dweller its a Float fork. Im guessing it must be over 15yrs old.

There are 3 boys in the house and this one is currwntly with the middle lad. They get used and passed down.

Im hoping i can get seals!
