I’ve got a stack of vinyl LPs of varying levels of obscurity, condition and musical value. I’d like to sell them, or at least most of them.

I could take them to the local collectors record shop but I suspect I wouldn’t get a very good price for them.

I’ve tried with the odd one on ebay and had no response. I’ve seen one or two auction houses that deal in vinyl records and a mate sold a bunch through one of these and got a reasonable price considering the shocking condition of his records.

Has anyone tried discogs – how does it work for selling? Any other ideas? I need to declutter.

That might shift one or two but I really want either a wider or a more specialist audience.

Never found much of a solution to this myself. The answer may be, they just don’t really have any value. That’s the case even if you see similar being sold in shops for high prices – turnover is low and the seller has to make their living. Go to an auction house and you’ll see boxes of them going for 2 quid or remaining unsold.

Try discogs. I’ve only used it for buying, but it seems quite well set up. Not sure what they charge, but it can’t be more than eBay and will probably be considerably less hassle.

Edit: also, gives us a rough idea of genre, just in case someone on here’s interested.

Offloaded most of my dead wood a few years ago and made good money on some of them – partly as I’d stuck with vinyl when everyone else had gone to CD so I had some rarities.

You can see what people are pricing stuff at, to get an idea.

Yeah, Discogs is pretty good – although it’s by no means a quick clearout method! You can just list things for sale and leave them up there until the day that someone who’s been after a certain album for years stumbles across it …

What type of stuff are you selling and what broad price are you after? I’d also be interested.

Discogs is ok but as others say not a quick fix, it’s list and wait for an email or cancel the listing when they don’t sell, rates used to be chargeable monthly ..

The stuff I’m selling is pretty much all old, late 60s and 70s – psychedelic rock, some folky (Love, Airplane, Doors, Mothers, String Band, Youngbloods etc. etc.). I’ll have to have a sift through and see what I want to keep for nostalgia’s sake and list the rest – sounds like Discogs is worth sticking stuff on to see what happens so I’ll need a list for that!

Stick a list up here OP. Loads of that stuff is right up my street not to metion Misstaxi who’s into old vynil more than I am. I’m sure plenty of others on here would like a look as well.

i watch mine and regularly see vinyl going for silly money.

or keep an eye out for record fairs and speak to a few dealers, catch with that is you’ll be selling at and to the trade so prices they pay will obviously be lower than you see them being sold at.

as a rough guide I expect to pay approx £2 – £5 for 2nd vinyl at car boots, and maybe a little more at record fairs, depending on what it is, rarity, condition etc

but your collection is not going to make you rich unless you have some incredibly rare stuff

I gave mine to Oxfam.  They have specialist shops (in London mostly) for selling music and also list them online.

You won’t see any money from them, obviously, but you can register your email with the items and they’ll send you updates as to how much they’ve sold for and made for the charity, so you get a lovely warm feeling.

I put a load of CDs on Discogs a few years ago. I sold a dozen or so the first week
and it dropped off to a few a month since. I am wondering about flogging my records, but they lived
though the 70’s and most are probably in what would be considered the worst condition.

There are actually 3, maybe 4 second hand record shops within 10 miles of my house, where I could sell stuff… have you checked the (ahem) Yellow Pages?

I may also be keen on some of it as well. Where do you live?
