Back In The Day[tm] I ripped some of my DVDs to the PC to save me faffing about with discs. As I recall Handbrake was the go-to, and DVD43 (for free, geddit) bypassed the copy protection. But that was, gods, 20+ years ago.

Today, I have a requirement to take a few of minutes of footage from a commercial disc. I don’t want to rip the entire thing, just a clip. To save me hours of fannying about, is there a preferred way of doing such a thing these days? A screen recorder might work even, it doesn’t have to be exceptional quality. It’s literally for me just to send to someone to go “see, this is what I was talking about earlier, I’ve not gone mad.”

Cheers in advance, card’s behind the bar, etc.

In Windows, the Windows key + G lets you record any window (it’s for gamers, hence the “G”).

Christ, I should’ve thought of Win-G, I’m an Xbox owner. Thank you.

Mp4 or mkv version are everywhere.

The DVD itself is obscure, the chances of a torrent is nil. There’s episodes on YouTube but not the specific clip I’m looking for.

If you want to do digital to digital (rip), Handbrake can but needs a file added into the installation. I forget what, but it’s easy to find.

Otherwise, DVD Decrypter then Handbrake is the thorough way to do it. Takes ages though – about an hour or two for a whole disc, altogether.

I always learn something new.  Very useful… thanks.

No reason not to use Handbrake. It worked back in the day and works now. I ripped my first DVD in years recently using it (very old film that is not on any streaming service or torrent site. I eventually tracked down a DVD but wanted to convert it to a usable format).

think I would fail at the first hurdle of not actually having a computer with a disc drive anymore!!

Yeah, it was one few occasions I’ve had to dig out the Superdrive I originally bought alongside my 2013 iMac. I believe I read that it was the single product Apple has sold the longest without changing/updating, at ~16 years, before it was discontinued earlier this year in the US, but UK stock still remains it seems.

    Does Handbrake rip DVDs??

I’ve been using Handbrake for encoding but DVDdecrypter to rip and there’s a few it won’t extract. I should have seen but did not!

Aye. As I said in the OP, Handbrake rips DVDs but needs a plugin for commercial DVDs to override the copy protection. Or at least, did, two decades ago. I used to use DVD43 but a quick google suggests that it’s obsolete as it’s 32-bit only. And yes, I have at least three computers with optical drives.

The disc isn’t a film, it’s a TV show called The Adventure Game. There’s a chap by the name of Bill Homewood who played Ron Gad, a character whose schtick was talking backwards. It’s a clip of him I’m after. There are clips and full episodes online, but he only appears as a recurring character in season 3 (and one episode of season 4) and the only place I can find those is on the DVD box set. Granted I haven’t looked for torrents, but it’s the sort of thing which if it exists at all will have 1 seed and take a month to drag down.

I thought the deal with Handbrake was that you could start playing the DVD with something like VLC and that would unlock it, allowing you to rip it using Handbrake. Or maybe I was using a different ripper, it was so long ago, I don’t remember the details.

    In portrait.

    At an angle.

With someone talking about their itchy fanny in the background.

Alternatively @cougar2 LTT covered this recently, should get you up to speed.

Screenshot_20241112-134303 I couldn’t remember the show at first which is odd as it was on TV at a time, ’80 to ’86, id have absolutely been into it.

Then I saw this screen shot and it all came flooding back!

I don’t remember any such thing, but I do remember using DVD Shrink to rip DVDs. Cuz it was free. And simple.

Also used FreeMake and I must’ve liked that cos I bought a license. I wonder if it still works!

I was going to be a smart arse and say still illegal, but I’ve just checked and it turns out that in the UK it is legal to make a personal copy of a DVD and store it locally or on the cloud.

So that’s where “gronda” comes from??? TIL, and all that 🙂

Edit: I mean Gronda as an abbreviation of Great Rando of Arg, I knew it was The Adventure Game…

It has been for years, possibly decades.
