Does anyone have any recipes for making this sort of thing?

Some of the prices for shop-bought products are mental.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record when it comes to bike nutrition, check out the Feed Zone Portables book. There’s also a few of their recipes on the Skratch labs website (same crowd). They have some good savoury options that make a change too. A good blender and a rice cooker are your friends!

    Cheap white bread
    Cut off crusts
    Spread
    Peanut butter

Make a sandwich. Squeeze sandwich into ball. Roll and squeeze in hand until happy. Wrap ball in foil.

    HTH 🙂

Is there not something else that’s the new protien yet? There must be, I’ve not seen any of our apprentices cutting about with one of those daft shake bottles for ages!.

I’ve found the below super easy to make and pretty easy to get the ingredients.

    GCN NRG bars

I followed it pretty closely first time and then have just tweaked it as I’ve seen fit since then (bit less sugar, more fruit)

Just make sure you don’t leave them in the oven for too long.

Seem to last pretty well, I’ll find one in a forgotten pocket and still munch down on it weeks later.

    Good luck

Might not be quite what you’re after but a couple of recipes on bikepacking.com contain a fair amount of nuts for protein (you don’t need that much). I’ve meant to try making some but not yet got round to it.

Also ex bake off contestant David Atherton has a fair few recipes published in the guardian in a regular ‘fit food’ slot. Look back to some of the older ones for trail food etc.

    200g oats
    150g whey protein
    2 apples or pears, diced
    200g sultanas
400ml apple juice or Appley/Berry type fruit cordial (sugar free works fine).

    1. Oven on 160 deg
    2. Juice in pan on hob
    3. Dice apple
    4. Apple and sultanas in pan with juice for 5 to 10
    5. Butter bake tray
    6. Mix whey and oats in bowl
    7. Pour juice and fruit into dry goods bowl and mix
    8. Put in the bake tray and then oven for 20 to 25 minutes

    Optional

100g Dark choc melted in bowl over pan of water whilst in oven. Spread on top after.

Best non nut recipe (personal choice) I’ve seen. High protein and moist!
