I quite like the idea of a 1 box music server built around a Raspberry Pi, not a streamer but a hard drive based server.

I have a knackered Arcam AV amp and could use that enclosure to put the bits in, maybe even swop out the LCD display for something that could display track playing.

All a bit pointless I know but think it could be an interesting project.

Anyone done similar?

Never done this but watching with interest, I’ve got two Pi 4s sat here gathering dust and could do with a project.

Not quite similar, but mine runs Plex and has a HDD plugged in, but i then stream any music to the TV & speakers.

You can also turn them into airplay receivers with shareport…

I assume you can run both LMS and squeezelite on a Rasperry Pi with Raspian (I run LMS on a debian server and squeezelite on a debian linux frontend box but don’t see why they both can’t run on the same box).

both are easy to install (if you’re ok tinkering with pis) but in my experience a) depening on the size of the library you’re linking to the UI can be slow and b) i kept getting low level feedback on the audio (using older audioquest dragonfly usb) which negated the point of having a decent quality streamer (suggestions welcome but could be the dragonfly)

I use one – running Volumio. I stream Spotify to it, but you can link it up with drives to be a server too.

Running a Pimusicbox with some sound card attached (hifiberry I think), optical out into a Denon box.
Quite easy to use, works off a usb things, network drive, Spotify, other streaming sites, AirPlay etc.

Got a web based interface and I think you can use some app based remote.

I have an old Gamecube in the loft I reckon would be perfect as a radio unit with a bit of careful modding, speaker at the fan intake and a touchscreen across the old controller port panel. Room in there for a hard drive too.

If you want headless you could probably mod an old hard drive enclosure and shoehorn a Zero in there.

Plex makes a good backend or frontend, and as you’re talking RPi you’ll be hacking something anyway. The standard audio output is pretty lame though, there are hats with decent DACs available.

I looked at doing this for ages but ended up getting an audiophonics raspdac i-sabre that I use with moode controlled from my phone or iPad.

It’s a stunning bit of kit for the cash, I have all my cd burnt to flac and play from a usb stick, the sound is amazing too.

If you do Facebook search for the audiophiles UK group and if you join that there is tons of info on them if you search.

I have got a https://www.hifiberry.com/shop/boards/hifiberry-dac-pro/ and have it running Raspbian and streaming spotify. Sounds great and just appears a device that spotify can connect to .

Various Pi’s with PiCorePlayer running around the house, one with LMS (Logitech Media Server) and external drive holding all the music, you can configure all this through PiCorePlayer I also use HiFiBerry DACs for amps that don’t have HDMI.

Dlna server is what you need.
