Q’s for the Wool Bedding Flock

For how long did you air your wool bedding after it arrived?  I have a mattress topper and pillow that have both been aired for the last week but the odour is still there.  Yes, it’s not as strong but still pong and undecided whether to put them to use.

Secondly, how do you plump a mattress topper as it took all my strength to lift it onto the bed.

Lastly, noticed after ordering that M&S sell wool pillows that are half the price of the wool bedding companies.  Haven’t seen them in the flesh though.

It was just from Dunelm Mill so nothing incredibly fancy. One the best things we’ve ever bought by the way – absolutely fantastic winter and summer.

I just double-checked with Mrs AD and she can’t remember it ever having an odour either.

We have a wool duvet from an outlet in Rowsley. We can’t remember it smelling at all, it’s brilliant, a bit of weight to it but not too warm but also nice and cool. Bizarre!

We’ve wool pillows and duvet from Slumber down. We sleep on a wool mattress.

We aired for a few days, then just stuck it on.

A year in you can still get a slight whiff from the duvet of sheeples.

They are the shizzles for better sleep for me

We also used the woolroom in rowsley, and likewise don’t recall having to air it. Pillows came from baavet, and again no odour as such

Haven’t seen them in the flesh though.

Traditionally, they leave that bit on the sheep 🙂

(Assuming this is their duvet) this +1, exact same experience twice, after one of our pets was sick on the first & it soaked through. After we bought the second we had the first washed by Johnsons the cleaners, & it was good as new. We were concerned it being wool, it might shrink, it didn’t

Two Woolroom duvets and neither had any odour or instructions to air before use.

Wool duvet here, Baavet. Put it straight on, I loved the sheepy smell, it felt very cosy I imagined being a medieval crofter sleeping above his flock.

Probably lost its smell completely after a couple of months I reckon. Either that or you just don’t notice.

Overall it has been great, really love it. As above, one of the best things we have bought, it was a second so about 80 quid and worth every penny, all year round.

Madame has a wool pillow, also lost odour pretty quickly iirc.

I really like the way they weigh a bit more and fit round you, a bit like a blanket but nicer

Re prices, I dont know. We bought ours cos it was on sale and made in uk from uk sheep. Maybe theres a premium for that, but 80 quid didnt seem much to me. I like the idea of a uk made duvet, it seems a good thing

The ones we bought were ‘cheap’ Slumberdown and were UK wool and UK made on the packet.

How much were they Matt? Looking for a second duvet..

I think we got ours maybe £10 cheaper – but bought a pack of duvet and pillows off Wayfair.
We found that ‘lightweight’ is almost too warm for summer and medium weight was more than warm enough through the winter.

Mine came from woolroom. Have 4 pillows and a topper too. Yeah, smelt a bit sheepy to start with but just got used to it and don’t notice at all now, or it’s just much reduced. Maybe a bit of both. Use the summer weight one all year round as the house has heating. Recommend. Bought a new bed, just need a new mattress now.

Our baavet smelled sheepy for a good few days and then gradually went away, or we got used to it. Really quite it though!

Ours is a Hypnos wool something or other.

It replaced a comfy but very hot memory foam topped mattress, which had also developed ‘divots’ where we slept.

For both of us the wool/cotton mattress is just cooler and less sweaty. It doesn’t do that thing of suddenly feeling ‘hot’ after you’ve just got off to sleep. And a hard to explain niceness to the soft topper bit.

Baavet here. Put it on straight away. Noticed the smell out of the pack but then forgot about it. Same with the pillows we got later. I do quite like the smell though.

Little review after almost one week of (hot weather) use … mattress topper has been doing a great job of not letting me overheat, a very noticeable difference compared with the previous synthetic topper.  Have been reducing then adding wool to the pillow and must say that it generally feels more comfy, can still smell it though!

yes , no overheating is a popular attribute in our house. Having used a conventional duvet recently, i really noticed it

Outer cover yes but the blurb is rather confusing and it looks as though their folding pillows can be washed complete.  Mine is a different type.  However, I liberally use a pillow spray each night and hope that doesn’t permeate the wool!

Synthetic materials have a huge convenience factor, my previous topper plus current duvets are incredibly light and take up considerably less space when they need to be packed away when seasons change.  Also, wool ain’t cheap compared with synthetic!

Bought some (cheap) 100% linen nightwear and all good so far in the sticky weather.

does anyone have any experience of silk filled duvets?

Is this for an allergy sufferer?  Have seen silk mixed with a synthetic but don’t believe the percentages were stated.  Have also seen merino wool duvets.

Anyone any experience of the wool IKEA duvet? Any good or worth spending a bit more at the woolroom or similar

Well, I’d not use an underblanket beneath a topper of any sort, can’t see why on top of one but under your bedsheet would be a problem, if you mean an overblanket even less so. I’ve no actual experience though.
