Imo the book was so good ( In fact possibly my favourite adult book of all time) that the film seemed a major disappointment.

I think that’s usually the case when they make a film based on a book.

Pretty much every film/combo ever made, the book is better.

I had never seen Papillion. I finally got round to watching it this evening. Thoroughly unenjoyable. I’m guessing something went over my head that makes it such a classic?

Anyone fancy filling me in on what I’m missing?

When he got shot with darts then ended up in the idyllic beach tribe with topless women everywhere, who then all suddenly disappeared one morning I assumed it was all a hallucination and he never got further than his first stint in solitary. But no?

^^ agreed! I couldn’t follow that either! it wasn’t as good as you lot made out! I would have preferred rebuilding a HopePro2 rear hub..

I clearly missed a great deal.

I didn’t see it. Started at 10pm my time. Too late for me now …

I watched it for the first time too. I assumed the tribe had moved on, next shot the sea was rough and the weather had turned.

It was depressing and hard going, I kept going to the out of a sense of duty tbh.

I thought it was a really good the filming was excellent . What stands out is the confidence to just let the actors act without trying to hold the audience with “action” , I also like the cinematography.

The story is a bit odd in places as ii understand it from the wife who has read the book he claims he did marry a local girl and live idyllically on a beach for a bit but just walked out on her because he is “pap” and just needs to be free. The scriptwriter probably thought that would make him look a bit of an arse so turned it round to a whole village walking out on him.
