i have a problem with my bike since day 1 really…

i thought it was like this untill it still hasnt become better.

i have encluded a video to show you the annoying noise and to help me with what i have to do.

    i have already…

cleaned the brakes, resurfaced the pads to new, reset the caliper position with the caliper loose and tighten bolts whilst holding the brake lever fully down.

anything else you guys have for me to try?
o brakes are hayes stroker ryde btw with 203mm discs

New pads will sort that I suspect, however some discs seem to squeal no matter what. Could try getting the mounts faced.

I know, I wasn't going to say anything as I thought it would be rude.

There's your problem. Hayes Strokers. Mate has the Trails and they always make horrible graunching sound, plus they are very grabby

try centralising pads the hope way – there is a vid on the site – basically use the slotted mounts to get the caliper central on the disc then centralise the pads in the caliper.

    Other things to try

What did you clean the brakes with? Some things leave contaminents. Sand down both the disc and the pad and re bed in

Copaslip on the back of the pads

File a tiny chamfer on the leading edge of the pads

    New pads

I'd be more worried about the chain oil you'll sprayed all over the walls.

203 on the rear is the problem! Why do you feel the need to have such a big rotor. Does the front do the same?

I had Hayes Strokers on my Trance and decided to put 203 on the back, after 10 minutes of riding it was off and a 185 put on there instead.

Huba huba. Lets see more of the blond. Oh and your brakes or shifters will have scratched your floor. What TJ said.

why did u take the 203mm off the rear, i find it great. it made the same noise with the 185mm so i thought i would change the disc and try it but its the same…

not really wanting to buy new pads as they are only new. lol

the blonde is all yours she moaning about a certain bike in the living room 😉

    Nick,
The bloody noise of them when they get ever so slightly bent! DROVE ME BONKERS!!!

Give the disc a good clean with brake cleaner then I know this sounds really stupid but once clean rub your fingers over the disc brake surface to supply just a little natural grease. It worked for me.

Speaking of discs have you tried switching the rotors around, front on the back and so on? Or try another disc to see what happens.

Just buy some shimano brakes and sell whatever they are job done.

I had something very similar to this. Tried everything and everyone sorting the brakes out, and it turned out that the cones in my rear hub needed tightening. The wheel kept leaning on the disc under strain cos they were loose. Tightened cones (thanks EBC) and problem solved.

thought this was going to be one of those you tube vids were more is going on in the background when the sweet young thing walked in, was expecting the door to open again and a loud screem are well off to clean the knucles 😯

The pistons on my Hayes get really sticky really fast, if you can be bothered cleaning and greasing them with DOT grease they feel and sound great for about three rides, then you need to repeat.

Also, the stock pads take AGES to bed in, and until they do they scream like banshees.

Am almost at the end of my tether with mine, far too much faff, and don't get me started on how quickly and how noisily the rotors seem to bend…

(oh, and in general I never pull the levers when the bike is upside down, it can introduce air into the hoses really easily)

dont think it's anything to do with size, my juice 5 160mm rear brake does the same occasionally.. i haven't found a recipe against it, i just ignore it and sometimes the squeal goes away.. oh well.

on a different note, my detective skills tell me that doesn't look like your typical british appartment at all, and i could swear the girl in the background was saying something that sounded like german? may i ask where you're from, nick christy 🙂 ?

Copper slip on the back of the pads . . . job done!

I wish my rear brake was as quiet as that! My hope mini didn't squeal, it screeched till you could feel it in your bones. Tried everything, got mounts faced, brake serviced e.t.c. Then i noticed drop-outs weren't straight.

Get shop to check drop-outs are aligned, they should have the two tools required to do this, then face your mounts, then copper slip on back of pads.

Brake squeal is probably the most random thing on a bike, pot luck really. So if it still squeals after this, just get some new brakes and get the shop to fit them and be responsible/liable for any problems.

right i just rotated the brakes so the 'squeeling' brakes now on the front and the good front ones now on the rear. but to no avail. still squeaking!!!

    **** sake!!

    BIKE SHOP TIME!

I took the bike to the shop i bought it from and they say that i need new pads and disc. but it cant be this as i have swapped the brakes front to rear so surly that eliminates this! the discs are new as is the bike!!!!

Nooooo, step away from the vaseline 😉 . I'm pretty sure the copper slip will do the trick – never had a problem with squealing brakes (unless it's wet) and I always coat the back of new pads before fitting them. Just double check too that there is no paint on the back of the disc mount on your frame. Never needed to have frame mounts faced but I've just built up a new bike and had to scrape an uneven layer of powercoat off the back of the frame mount.

Dirt, you need some dirt. I know it's probably illegal in Innsbruck, but everything in that vid looks sparkly clean. I deliberately haven't mentioned your goodlady (though I suspect she's actually your cleaner?)

copperslip just it the indentation on the back of the pads?

    mamadirt

All over the back of the pads (just make sure none gets on the front).

Tails – after the last few weeks I've had building/stripping, buying and selling, all in the name of something slightly less nickable than the Slopestyle for going to work/the shops, I'm keeping quiet about this one for the mo'. Looks fantastic though – I'd like to think I'm finally sorted (and so does my credit card 🙄 ). Watch . . . this . . . space . . .
