If you are already avoiding buying sandwiches on the go, up your home sandwich-making game by buying a whole chicken instead of pre-cooked sliced stuff – I can make a small chicken (that are around £3 in the supermarket) do sandwiches for the two of us for around three days and then I often do a soup with the scratty bits and finally a stock with the carcass.

Alternatively, if I am doing a family Sunday roast, I always buy a bigger chicken than we need that can be used for sandwiches as above or I make chicken fried rice or chicken and leek pies with the leftovers. (And of course boil the carcass down).

Before you buy a consumable, Google to see if you can make it relatively quickly. There’s a lot of stuff out there that’s dead simple to make, Even if you’re time poor. Eg bars of soap. 6 quid gets you a massive block of neutral glycerin based stuff that you can just melt down in the microwave, add whatever coloring/scent oil you want, let it solidify, then cut to size. Lasts years! Same with shampoo bars.

    That’s a good idea!

I’m quite into my essential oils and have just bought some new ‘flavours’ with a view to diversifying into making a beard oil/mousturising perfume type thing using coconut oil as the carrier…it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to make a soap bar out of it too!

Unrelated…have you seen the price of Sandalwood oil these days?! This stuff is only 5% sandalwood, the rest is cocunut oil, a tiny bottle of pure sandalwood oil is about £60! And I thought Jasmine was expensive!

Have you come across first stocks and second stocks? After you’ve made your stock, add some more fresh veg/aromatics and make a second stock with the left over bones and veg from the first stock. You can then either use your second stock as a base to make an amazing first stock, or use it in something where the stock doesn’t need to taste so strong like a risotto or similar. If you want to get super into it, you can use it as a master stock to cook veg and things in to make them ultra delicious.

Also breadcrumbs, I save crusts of bread and let them dry out in a cooling down oven after cooking. Once I get too many I make a treacle tart.

£35 clippers in covid times (so I probably overpaid) plus scissors. Free haircuts monthly since then.

Discourage any children you have from taking an interest horses.

You need to encourage them into something else, otherwise you risk that they take an interest in MTB.
