I’m leaving Hartlepool tomorrow morning around 9am (provided the boat I fixed this afternoon is still functioning as intended in the morning) heading home to Bournemouth, planning to stop and ride in the way back, with Peak District is the current thought, either Cut Gate or Jacob’s ladder, I’ve done a couple of Ladybower loops, with some Win Hill trails, but not done Cut gate or Jacob’s

Can any locals advise what’s riding better, or good alternatives, or any other location suggestions approximately on route?

Both good, but the Jacob’s Ladder loop is all rocky bridleway so completely weatherproof.

Can reccomend Cut Gate at this time of year, probally best as a out and back from Langsett but that may depend on whether you want to take in Whinstone/Cutthroat to go with it, depends how long you have. I usually start at Ladybower just becuase I know it.

The other benefit of Cut Gate from Langsett is it’s a main road drive off the M1 and easy to get to compared to where you’d need to go (Edale) for Jacob’s. Could easily add another hour on your trip off the motorway just to get to parking up and back.

Done both in the last couple of weeks and they are both running good.

Cutgate from Langsett is the way we do it due to that end been nearer.

Other to consider is Wharncliffe. Daughter has been a few times recently, including today, whilst home from NZ and says it’s still as good as she remembers it.

So long as the weather on the tops is good, my choice would be cut gate from langsett with extras. PM me if you want a good route …it’s a bit cheeky.

Otherwise, if the weather ain’t all that, wharny laps (better in the wet than win hill)

Only done Cut Gate once, but did it from Ladybower end parking at Fairholmes.

For me that makes more sense. Gets the bastard climb done first, left side descent to Langsett (not North America), pub stop at Langsett – back up North America and the best descent comes at the end back down to the res. Can then do some bits round Ladybower/Win Hill if you want more

Thanks all, I’ve ridden Wharncliffe quite a few times and enjoy it, but prefer a bigger techy xc ride than winch and plummet at the moment.

Slight thread hijack but what exactly is the Jacob’s Ladder loop? I’ve got family living quite close and it’s something I’ve been looking to ride next time I’m there

Whilst this is indeed the received wisdom, it’s not completely true. The climb up to Hollins gets quite muddy and Rushup Edge is vile in the wet. ( Footpath slightly less vile than Bridleway!)

You could of course go up Chapel Gate instead and miss both out.

The above opinion is just a qualification of what thingy said, in general terms he is right. It is indeed one of the most weatherproof Peak routes.
