I think I’ve read somewhere that Bond had retired, she was assigned 007, then he comes back… e.g. from IMBD “His peace is short-lived when Felix Leiter, an old friend from the CIA, turns up asking for help…”

Guardian review says he comes back in some kind of freelance capacity, rather than reclaiming the 007 moniker. Guess I’ll know for sure in a few hours…

For those who have seen it, which, if any, films need to be watched first to get the most out of this? I’ve heard “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” mentioned.

Nah, watch Spectre to get Madeline’s back story fresh in your head if you haven’t seen it for a while (I found it not as half as bad as I remembered if that helps).

The links to OHMSS are strong, but all thematic (use of the 1969 DBS, music (a lot!) and a couple of lines), not anything plot wise.

Went last night with BBG and FBG (FBG is a big bond fan) and went full 4DX. Really enjoyed it – best of the Craig era films IMO. BBG and FBG were in bits at the end though. The boy in particular had tears streaming down bless him.

The bad news is I think I’ve lost my wallet. prbably shaken out of my pocket by the 4DX seats…

Yeah this for me. I thought it was a great film, the time went quickly, and junior was over the moon about it. For me the first Craig film and this are the best. The first because of the impact he brought to the new style of Bond, and this because… well because of what it is.

    Noted so many tributes throughout.

The next movie has a very very hard act to follow IMO.

I think I might have to watch it again…..

Loved the little homages to earlier Bonds – mainly OHMSS.

Not sure I thought it was as good as Casino or Skyfall though….

Saw it last night. Entertaining, but at times the contrast between it trying to break the Bond mould while also being a Bond pastiche felt a bit clunky.

A good finish to the Craig era.

A highlight was the Cuban agent, it could have been awkward but they played the generation gap well and she was effortlessly badass.

Rami Malek excellent as ever as baddie, I was hoping Bond was going to drop him through bomb bay doors into the acid, but just shot him instead. Missed opportunity.

Bond will be back in “Time to Reboot”

So do we think that the next agent who assumes the 007 title will also be bestowed with the James Bond alias as an ongoing tribute to MI6’s finest?
Kind of like when Lazenby said ‘this never happened to the other fella’ at the start of OHMSS.

Jeez, we’re heading out to see it in a minute and my son’s just announced he’s putting some old jeans in the wash in an attempt to recolour them with some kind of in wash concoction! How inopportune!

I liked it but agree it wasn’t quite on par with Skyfall.

I didn’t feel like Malek was quite the baddy he could have been. My missus put it best by noting that despite wanting to commit genocide she just didn’t find him chilling enough. I just didn’t think he was in it enough.

    I didn’t think it felt like 3hrs.

The thing it did best of all was bring the Craig era bond films to a close as a complete story arc, previous bonds have essentially functioned as a series of self contained films. I’ll admit I sort of don’t care what they do next, whether they follow Bond’s successor (who was maybe a little underdeveloped in this film?) Or opt for a reboot I kind of feel like it’s been well enough wrapped up now.

I do however think it’s going to send the angry incell trolls into overdrive, particularly the ending…

I loved it, but can anyone explain what Safins plan actually was after he’d got revenge on Spectre? As in who was he going to target with the mass-produced Damocles? He’d stolen a bunch of genetic records to presumably target someone but not sure if I missed who/that was?

As for what is next for the Bond franchise, I have sneaking suspicion (which I think would be cool), that they are going to reboot it set back in the 60’s. Perhaps the revenue stream from product placement will prevent that though!

I also think this is the point we might see spin-offs (be that films or TV series). The much touted Jinx spin off from Die Another Day never happened thank god, but I reckon they might try it with Naomi, or even better Paloma. I’d personally like to see them have a crack at Charlie Higson’s Young Bond books

Might have misheard but when Safin was talking to new 00X did he say something about wiping out ‘the whole of your race’ which was a possibility given the extension of the DNA profiles.

I thought it was ace, didn’t feel like 3 hours, just enough corniness to be a proper Bond film, good ending for the Craig era to find out he’s just a big softy after all.

And I was aiming at No Time to Dye earlier, but Dye (or Dry) Another Day is even better.

I thought he wanted to kill everyone, but spare a chosen few to repopulate?

Or maybe a Thanos type deal?

I loved it. Long but I think it deserved it. I’d dehydrated myself purposely all day!

I agree with the above, a really good way to round off the Daniel Craig era. I was surprised how much it touched me!

I absolutely loved the little nods to OHMSS, the musical score is superb with the clever strings taking you back in time 50 years!

In the future, who knows, young Bond?

watched it last night, like timmys, I really couldn’t fathom out Safin’s plan either. I think the producers realised as well,  hence the (what to me) felt like a re-shoot of Mallory and Bond on Embankment discussing the nature of the threats they all face now being “We don’t know who are enemies are, or what they want” I think he was just  a “baddy” for the 00’s to fight. in the style of older Bonds, complete with underground liar in a disused bunker stylee.

As for the reboot, mleh, I don’t think they’ll even be as subtle as to try to explain it. We’ll just get a re-boot, and I’ll bet 50p it won’t be Leshana. Although I’ll bet she’ll get a TV series out of it.

I think it might make sense and be interesting for them to go back with ‘Nomi’ and fill in a back story, she’s supposedly been a 00 for two years by the time of this film, and it felt like she needed more backstory TBH, there’s easily an in-between prequel film or a series in that. Build that character and see if she gains some traction, dare I say it draft Phoebe Waller-Bridge back in to at least help round her out.

I’m not bothered about a reboot personally, the old films, based on the original books stand on their own. But it may well be one of those things that waits half a decade and then they can make a fuss over picking the next bond again. There’s an opportunity to make money, but Bond is a different sort of franchise, the films are both in and of their times at the same time as carrying a bit of nostalgia.

Going back and remaking Bond in period correct settings feels rather redundant now, if they’re going to reboot it, new plots and current settings, try to move it forward. For people that just want to watch the same action film over and over there’s plenty of Marvel on Disney+ 😉

At the end of the credits there was the usual “James Bond will return” As much as a step forward as it was (for this franchise) to have a black woman as a 00, I doubt very much, they’ll be keen to hang a couple of films on her TBH, they’re just too conservative for that, and the usual “who will be the next Bond” generates so much publicity, they’d be reluctant to give it up.

Personally, i think Bond as a franchise is pretty much done, it’s had a hell of a run, but the Daniel Craig era was a reboot to match up with the Bourne stuff and other ideas, i just can’t really see what they can do to appeal to future audiences without a real think about it.

I can’t see Nomi having another outing, that’s just not a Bond franchise, that’s its own thing, and in this day and age, it’s again fighting against a fair few movies that have done this style already, same with a reboot with someone remotely famous, who out there is in their early 30s that can go into this role and get a good 3 or 4 movies over 15 years, not many, i don’t think many would care that much about changing some of the character either, i just don’t see it really working as well again, it’s a downward spiral now and probably not a great career move for someone this time around.

Very puzzled about the ending – they haven’t killed 007, they’ve killed James Bond. Anyone who plays 007 now will need their own back-story, their own DB5, their own ‘shaken not stirred’. By killing James Bond they’ve killed almost 60 years of character development. Really, nobody cares whether Bond is 007, or retired Commander Bond – he is the character, ‘Bond, James Bond’. It’s the Bond franchise, not the 007 franchise. Put another character into the 007 position and it’s just Bourne or Mission Impossible. And I’m saying this as someone who cares very little about Bond films. As I said, I;m very puzzled about the thinking behind this.

Personally, i think Bond as a franchise is pretty much done

The crowds in the cinema would seem to disagree with this, but it was a wet weekend and there’s been a lot of hype about this film.

I just mean the next phase is going to be hard to follow, it’ll be another 4 or 5 years until it’s even out, you’re going to have them trying to sell a new Bond (or whoever) and do they do another reboot as per Casino Royale, it worked first time, but what appetite for another redo?

I just see the market getting bigger with this stuff, and now having to start afresh, it’s not going to be easy to follow the Craig era.

She did say “Did you think they’d retire the number” that being 007. She then handed it back and he had 007 to the titles. She was still a 00 so must have had another number.

Personally I’d retire the franchise there.

The uphill drive at the end looks like it was along the road where Diana Rigg bought the farm but in the opposite direction. Although the lay-by has been surfaced now and there’s a decent crash-barrier.

    Yes that’s my anorak there!

I’ve been talking to a colleague through the day about the film. He went to see it twice over the weekend. We’ve both realised how little of the film made sense once you start thinking about it. 😀

Yeah, favourite moment was the whole Blofeld scene, being brought out like a prize on bullseye and then the mess that then occurred to support the plot
