Decided it was time to retire the 2012 Nukeproof Mega so just picked up this Trek Roscoe 9 yesterday via Bike2Work. Excluding my gravel bike, it’s my first hardtail in over 20 years. I love it so far though, and a no point on last night’s test ride did I find myself missing the full squish. Definitely going to need some tyre inserts though, at least for the rear.

Looks great. Trek do make good hardtails, eh?

Reminds me a bit of my much-loved Trek Stache from about 10 years ago:

@chakaping yeah they’ve certainly done well with this, although obviously I have no other hardtail experience to compare it to.

I always liked the look of the Stache! I suspect the new Roscoe 7, 8 and 9 may be it’s spiritual successor (the 6 still uses the old frame).

I like the look at that! Nice and straightforward.

@nickc My thoughts too. I think the gravel bike has made me appreciate the joys of a simple, no fuss bike… and given me a better eye for picking the right line which will translate well to riding the Trek. I’ll no doubt be slower downhill on this than the Mega, but I’m happy with that 😀

Have fun, and it looks like you already are!

I succumbed recently when the price dropped to what seems a silly level for what is a very well put together bike. The Mega Corp was after £2,250 when they first came out.

Mine has been used a lot in the mud over winter and has been superb. It does a fine job up the climbs as well as being bomb proof on the downs. There are some great touches too, like the rear wheel pick up sound, and the cable routing is top notch.

The only ‘con’ I’ve got so far is that the fork is a bit basic in terms of adjustment and feel. But you can’t accuse it of being flexy. Dropper lever is a bit pants too so switched that out.

    Enjoy!

@andrewreay Yeah it’s an absolute steal at it’s current price (£1495), plus the additional savings from Bike2Work.

I do love the sound of the rear wheel, and also how quickly it engages as soon as you pedal.

Cable routing is nice although when it comes to the brakes needing bled I may shorten the hoses a little bit. The shop also put my left brake through the left of the frame, which has created an unsightly loop on that side. It should go through the right with the dropper cable. Again, something to be sorted when the brakes eventually need bled.

I’ve still to have a proper fettle with the fork. I could never find a happy setting with the Motion Control on my old Lryiks so maybe less is more with the 36 Rhythm. The GRIP adjustments seem to work well.

I actually find the dropper level to be quite comfortable, more so than my Reverb which always gave me a sore thumb. I may still swap it out for an I-SPEC Shimano level at some point though.

The downtube protector is a nice tough too, however it doesn’t seem to be stuck on very well so I’ll need get some double sided 3M tape or similar.

Have you kept the XR4s on yours? I’ve got no plans to replace mine until they’re worn but already thinking what I’ll go for next 😀

Ignore the kit tarts, nowt wrong with a nice straightforward alu trail hardtail, especially one with room for proper sized tyres.

Good choice, may it serve you well.

Have you kept the XR4s on yours?

    Yes. I really like them.

They have been brilliant in the mud. Well, much better than the DHRs and DHF.

They do drag a bit on the flat, but then they are 2.6 so not sure if anything else would be noticeably better. When they wear out I may go like for like replacements. Other option currently considering is Wild Enduro. But some way off. No inserts BTW.

Re the dropper lever, I just couldn’t cope with the shiny surface on the thumb ‘grip’, so it had to go. Also, same lever they put on a Marlin which felt a bit stingy.

I like Trek. I was expecting a Merida or a Giant from the thread title.

Well, Trek sponsored the biggest cheat in the history of sport, so they are the embodiment of true evil

Although I did buy a Trek last month

@hatter Thanks! It felt like sitting on a motocross bike when I first got on it and looked at the front wheel!

@andrewreay That’s good to hear they’ve been working well for you. I need to play around with the pressures a bit on future rides.

Interesting you prefer them to DHF/DHRs as that’s one of the combos I would have considered. I normally use Schwalbe MM/NN or two NNs but would want a change from those if replacing the XR4s. Conti Kryptotals look good. As I said though, I’m happy to ride them for as long as I can.

A mate stuck a bit of skateboard grip tape to his dropper lever. I ride gloveless as much as I can though, so that wouldn’t work for me. What remote did you switch to?

    @finbar
I didn’t realise Meridia were as big as they are. I’ve always thought of Giant, Specialized and Trek as the big 3.

Never had a Giant, but I did had a Demo 8 and SX Trail from Specialized. This is my first Trek, although my dad did get an 820 free with a TV from Radio Rentals in the 90s. I think I had a Muddy Fox Alu Lazer at the time, which was much cooler.

    @honourablegeorge
Lance still beat all the other dopers fair and square 😀

    What model did you buy?

Nice bike. I like Trek, I think they make well thought out bikes for a good price.

@hooli me too. I would have loved a Session back when I was more into DH, and the Slash has always been appealing.

Trek are the only megacorp evil bike brand that I like and I’ve owned a few over the years. My first proper MTB was a Trek 6500d and the Stache was just silly fun. The Fuel is always a nice, no nonsense full sus MTB too.

That looks like top fun OP, enjoy!

Looks a great hardtail that, brilliant value for money. How heavy do they come up? guessing fairly portley with the 2.6inch tyres and OEM Fox 36.

I just bought a Procaliber 6 for No 2 Skipperlet. Lovely bike.

@funkmasterperp I couldn’t agree more. Fuel EX8 Gen 5 arriving tomorrow, to replace my elderly EX8. I do not deal well with change 😁

OP I tried a Roscoe 9, it was a close call with the EX8. Look ace in red 👍
