Like some others on here, I have been eyeing up the Huntsman as a do it all local/Bikepacking/Winter HT.

Anyway after waiting for On-One to provide a Huntsman in frame only, I gave up and found a near mint one 2nd hand on Ebay

Decided to build it with some Brand new 130mm Revs (Alpkits Ebay shop) a Deore groupset (C2W) and use my existing Hope Hoops for the wheels. Dropper is compliments of CRC on a flash sale (£40) and as are the bars and stem (Nukeproof Neutron)

Lastly the brakes are Formula RX/R1’s off Ebay, but they may get changed later as they are bit tatty, but work OK.

Size is Small and it weighs around 30lbs, which to be truthful was a bit of a shock 😬. I had in mind circa 28lbs, but I suppose the cheaper stuff does end up weighing more.

Nice grips! Quite like the colour combo. Floor could do with a mop 😉

Never thought I’d say it but. I’m not a fan of cables outside frames now 🙁

    Nice looking rig otherwise

Tidy. I like it. How does it ride

30lb doesn’t seem to be too bad for a steel frame / deore stuff (heavy) and Hope wheels can be quite heavy.

Frame must be a chunk lighter than my Marino as that weighs about 30lbs but has much lighter bits in it – carbon cranks / bars / xm421 rims on erase components hubs etc

I reckon the Huntsman looks decent – should be a lot of fun – enjoy!

I’ll get right on it. 😉

    How does it ride

Don’t know yet, was faffing with the brakes so didn’t have time to try it, bars seem a bit too high, but thats because I have short legs, so a flat bar may be called for .

I know what you mean, but they are so much easier to build. 😀

Cranks should be at quarter to 3.

Tyre logos should line up with the valves, and then positioned at 12.00.

Paintwork on the garage door is a bit grubby.

I had no issue with the floor!

Nice though. I’ve been waiting for frame only to come up as an option; I mostly run my BigWig SS so be nice to have the SS dropouts. But not sure I’m convinced it’d make a good bike-packer as the top tube is very sloped and not a lot of room in the frame for a bag, bottles etc.

Looks good, I always feel Planet X manage to photograph their MTB’s in a way that makes them look pretty awkward but yours looks right.

For some bizarre reason I was thinking of you today (hose guide surgery on the Kona) and then this pops up 🙂

Nice functional bike. Not surprised it is heavy – we had a 14″ Inbred frame and it was 1.25 lb heavier than the 26er frame I made my lad (which only had one butted tube). God knows what they make them from….. At least you’ll never break it.

That looks way less ugly than they do on the On-some website.

That looks like it would be fun down a suitably twisty and rocky trail…

Looks good. What 30lbs in real money?

Edit: 13.6 kilos. Seems quite good to me.

Looks great! Quite fancy one of these myself

13.6kg for a steel hardtail is pretty good if you ask me. Mine weighs 15.5kg…

waves to Mick_R, that Kona was still a great bike, lets hope it doesn’t break

I am used to my Solaris which was down at 28lbs, so anything North of 30lbs is new Territory to me.

I grabbed one of the £600 full builds at the weekend, was looking for a frame only but couldn’t ignore that it’s basically £200 for a full (basic but solid) build kit

I ordered it over 2 days ago though and haven’t heard anything from them, despite being ‘same day dispatch’ and ‘next day delivery’. Hopefully it at least turns up in the right size

Looks like a great build, really nice looking frame too, shame they won’t sell them as frame only, confirmed by PX on whatsapp this morning 🙁

Is the rear tyre on the wrong way round?

Any size XL Huntsman owners out there – any feedback on how they ride? How much does an XL frame weigh? I’m interested in one (XL) as a singlespeed.

Me and a mate have XLs. Well, I do, my mate bent the rear end on the second ride and they have him a Big Dog instead

Got them as complete bike so no idea on frame weight but the bike isn’t heavy for a cheapo build

Rides well, I find it harsh but I have a recently reconstructed knee and haven’t been on a hardtail in ages so not really a valid opinion. Geometry wise it’s great though, ridden some pretty steep stuff no problem

PSA for any other XL owners though, the eBay £19.99 special 8L ‘RockBros’ frame bag fits perfectly leaving just enough room for a 1l bottle on the seat tube and a tube strapped to the top tube/head tube junction

A bent rear end doesn’t sound good, which bit(s) of the frame bent and how?

The slotted dropout bent taking the chainstay with it. Honestly I reckon it was a genuine defect, either in the material itself or an assembly issue like loose dropout to frame bolts. Mine has taken a tonne of abuse since and is fine, the dropouts are no skinnier than other designs and no welds too close or anything weird

The fact he broke it riding along a cycle track to work having only done an XC ride on it previously while mine has been hucked to flat with full bikepacking kit attached and not broken suggests the design itself is OK

I’ve just built up one of these as a single speed and have managed it down to just under 12kg so about 26lbs on a 120mm fork though to be honest as much fun as it is it would be better suited as a140mm with a few gears. I use it for wet and/or mid week blasts at the local trail centre.
