MTB shoes with wider toe box

Hi all,

Looking for some SPD shoes to replace an ancient and heavy pair of Shimano Flats.

Ideally something with a wider toe box so I can double up on pairs of socks as I suffer with poor circulation to my feet.

Ive tried a pair of 5-10 trailcross pro but had to size up to get a decent width but this meant they were too long and made clipping in feel vague.

I prefer something with a bit of flex so not an all out race show.

Under £100 if possible.

What would you recommend?

I’ve never been sunburnt through any of my riding shoes… Edit, that was a sneaky edit.

I’m watching with interest though as I need a wider toe box than the new five ten fit but have relatively “low volume” feet.

Tried ION? I find them a great fit.

Hellcats here. Still a little tight but need to play with the lacing.

I got some Leatt ones, they’ve changed the name now but basically ProFlat 3.0, specifically for wider than usual toe box and I’ve found them excellent in that department, while being plenty good in other ways. They have a ProClip version that would be worth you trying if you can.

I found Ride Concepts to be pretty roomy in the toebox area

I’ve got pretty wide feet and find the Sidi Mega shoes fit me really well

Above your budget but the Lake MX201 or MX169 they are made on Lakes new comfort plus last which features the most anatomically correct toebox ever seen on a cycling shoe. i.e allows for a straight big toe!

I have the CX201 road shoes which are made on the same last and despite having an entirely mesh front my feet were fine down to freezing temperatures in just a pair of injinji wool liner socks, oversocks and neoprene toe covers. The extra width in the toebox makes a dramatic difference to how my toes can wiggle and maintain circulation and warmth.

Lake wide XC shoes are generously wide but stingy in the toe box. They do a new wide fit trail shoe with the widest / flattest toe box I’ve seen but its very expensive.

I find there’s two types of wide fitting shoes.

Wide before the toes but still shaped for big toes that point inwards towards the other toes. Or still go pointy at the end. (Sidi, shimano, etc)

Wide at the toes for ‘foot shaped feet’ or spread out toes, or for big toes that go straight inline with the inside edge of the foot. (Lake, specialized, etc)

Ive had more luck with high volume shoes that can be stretched to suit me.

Northwave came recommended years back and the pair I bought have been very comfy for my hobbit feet.

I’ve noticed more recent Shimano shoes aren’t as wide in the toe box as previous shoes. I’ve two pairs of M089’s (an extra pair bought hardly used on ebay) as a result of finding the newer XC shoes a bit tight on the toes (still OK but tighter than I’d like). The ‘winter boots’ don’t seem to have changed much though (3 pairs).

I guess feet are getting wider anyway as I recon  alot of us spend a good deal of time not wearing shoes on a daily basis – I know mine are off as soon as I can.
