I maybe got more than that. Her wife is dying, she has not denied what she did in the past, she seems to have found a way to find strength to deal with what awaits her pretty soon. Marketing may not be her main concern right now.

Interesting to catch up with the Missy story. Didn’t realise the criminal activity was such big time stuff! Shame, but as the other interviewee said, MTB was going out of fashion, so she was looking for the fast buck. Totally disagree with Trimix’s assessment.

It's sad that all that talent got wasted on crime.

And it's sad her wife is dying.

There's still time for a happier ending though. She's still in the prime of life.

It's not even a crime any more in California.

Shame she had to go to prison for a herb that's no longer illegal where she lives.

Hmm, well, I didn't quite understand the full details of the crimes she was involved in but there were gold bars and millions of dollars involved, so pretty sure it's not as simple as 'she'd be ok to do that now'!

I wouldn't say it's been wasted as such. Yes she was locked up and yes that's going to go against her in the mainstream (as she said) but that's not necessarily a deal breaker. I'm pretty sure if she wanted a way back in she would be more than capable of finding one.

Back in to what?

Not racing and winning WCs. I love Missy but she's 46 now, hasn't raced professionally for 15 years and couldn't hold a candle to ACC on track back then nevermind against today's fast girls.

I've often thought it must be hard doing any of these races. Even to get in the top 20 you probably have to train so hard you cant hold down a normal job but we hardly remember who came second in last years world cup, let alone first.

So you train your nuts off for what ? Pretty much 99.9% of those competing will not win, probably 98% wont get paid much and 97% will get paid bugger all.

We only hear about the winners or those worth a story. I was at the DH / XC race in France earlier in the year. Lots of the big teams there with all the trucks / mechanics / physios etc. But the field full of camper vans and tents was larger. Those guys and girls didn't even get a mention, but they probably rode and trained just as hard.

Me too. I always said Giove like it rhymed with stove. Not "G Oh Vee" as they seem to be saying here.

Trafficking is still illegal plus she was taking it from CA to NY where she was arrested.

Anyway - "wasted talent" - wasn't wasted on crime ffs - she crashed and had a brain injury that forced her to retire.

OK drive and passion then.

There is obviously a lot more to her than the talent to ride a bike faster than other people.

When I saw the video title I thought it was going to be a video of a MTBer outrunning fake cops with dirt bikes and baja buggies down some amazing trails and through south american slums while carrying few kg of (fake) weed on her back.

Then saw the comments and realised I had the very wrong end of the stick...will watch it later as it looks like something to pay attention to rather than have on in the corner of the screen while working.

She finished racing long before she got busted.

Must admit I didn't know it was such a big bust or much about it though.

Nobody was really holding a candle to ACC, that's a bit of an unfair comparison considering she dominated for as long as she did. But that aside, as epicyclo said there's more than just racing at WC level.

Well considering nobody was matching ACC's streak I'd call it unfair, especially with a World Championship (and 3 third places), 2 overall World Cup season wins, 4 seconds, 2 thirds and 14 NORBA titles. Hardly an also ran.

Not in the women's field.
A top 15 is like a minute back on most 4 minute tracks.
If the girls coming in in 20th are training they're doing it all wrong.

Agree it's an interesting video. But after all that, to me at least, it seems she's got her priorities just about spot on now. Not sure she'd care for a holdall of stolen money. However rough what she's going through now must be, she certainly seems to have things in the right order now. Respect to her for that - probably would have been much easier for things to turn out very differently after a conviction for such a big haul of weed.

Thanks for posting. She’s a legend in my book. Always seems to have marched to the beat of her own drum which is more than most of us can say. I wish she’d got away with it. Here’s hoping the Missile and her wife have a good future.

Missy was cool as hell when I started riding in the late 90’s. The old Cannondale team was the best thing ever as far as I was concerned.

That film was genuinely interesting and balanced. Seems like she’s sorted her shit out after getting busted.

a hell of a lot higher up than 20th in the Womens. (without training, infact without having ridden DH for 6 months)

Kinda my point

Missy was a legend, just hope she does well now. I think it is very brave of her making an MTB video and not just disappearing after her drugs shame.

Kinda my point.

which illustrates mine. I’ve heard on the grapevine you are a decent rider. Why feel the need to shit on others in an area you don’t/can’t compete?

Haha. This might be correct.

But to be honest...- without "geex" such a forum might be boring. Geex is the guy who is adding stress.

just being realistic.

This Tom

I'm not shitting on anyone's achivement as I honestly don't see finishing a minute and a half slower than a podium time in a World level DH as an "achievement" worthy of celebration. Would you honestly celebrate male a rider doing similarly badly in the mens? or would you be realistic and think why is that guy even racing at WC level?

niche sport with not enough females competing is the real reason for the massive variance in ability having watched WC DH practice with girls there struggling just to ride the track in dry conditions it's not really an achievement someone of that level of skill being there. it's ****ing dangerous.

Probably time to step away from the screen dudes... infact. switch off all screens and radio and don't go outside.

Unless you can meet GWs standards for whatever it is you choose to do. As if you can’t, frankly, why are you even bothering?.

You're right, I probably wouldn't.

or would you be realistic and think why is that guy even racing at WC level?

Probably wouldn't think that either. If I'd ever qualified for something, I'd be thrilled. I once did quite well in one of the derbys in my skiing days, and was please with my achievement but was nowhere near the front runners. Should I have just not bothered going? I don't think so. Of course no-one ran up to me and hugged me, no-one cheered when I crossed the line (well, I did 🙂 ), and nor did I expect them to. Wouldn't expect people to tell me I'm a talentless loser either (it was fairly obvious and pointing it out wouldn't achieve much 🙂 ) and that I was training all wrong.

I would just expect anyone who said anything to me to be respectful of what I'd achieved for myself, and I think that might be what people are objecting to when you post comments like those.

Everyone's got to start sonewhere. I think anyone who zip ties a number board onto thier bike deserves a cheer, take the arguement that non winners aren't worth celebrating to its limits and anyone that doesn't win has just wasted thier time and that's clearly not true. Competition is more than just 1st to 3rd, there's just as much at stake for the riders battling between themselves for 34th.

What time they miss the podium by totally misses the point of the event

and repect the personal achievement. But that's not what I was actually commenting on. Just what the hand wringers choose to latch onto.

Everyone’s got to start somewhere.

Yes. Obviously. And I've not said otherwise. Probably not the best plan to go straight to the worlds highest elite level when you're still struggling riding DH courses at regional level though. Even If only from a rider safety perspective.
Like I said, the issue is the small numbers of women competing. The reality of this is you can turn up at a couple of local events and get a podium because there are 2 other girls there. Buy a licence and try your hand at a few bigger events and due to small numbers in many you could gain enough points to enter a WC fairly easily/quickly. Having the points to enter doesn't mean you've "trained" properly for it or even have the ability to ride the course safely.

Competition is more than just 1st to 3rd, there’s just as much at stake for the riders battling between themselves for 34th.

Er... there are only 15 places in DH WC finals. No WC series round ever sees 34 women qualifying

I was making the point about all competitors, not just women. But battling for 13th if youre in the womens event is probably just as important for the rider in question.

...yeah exactly why I was talking about 20th. Not 13th

Incase you still feel the need to make another point I hadn't ever been pursueing.

In mens it's closer to 20sec separating all 60 qualifiers
Generally 100+ riders fighting for those spots
All of them have a min of 40 UCI points ie. all capable of qualifying
