Lake District campsites (basic) near pubs

Looking for campsites that will accept a campervan without a booking and near a pub. The more basic the better. planning a climbing trip but the weather may not play ball. Thinking of Setmabanning in Threlkeld, Bays Brown in Langdale, Stonethwaite farm in Borrowdale, Coniston Hall. Anywhere else to consider?

I think there’s a farm on the road  near Keswick which has very basic facilities and a camping field but might not do motorhomes. I think there’s a pub on that road too. Sorry not much help

There’s at least one pub nearby, basic toilets and showers and they don’t take bookings but do have an overspill for busy times. Perfect for the 4 passes 🙂

There’s a pub in Coniston that does camper stop overs….Torver end of the lake. Coniston Hall campsite looked like my idea of hell a few weekends back, we were above it on the CAMC site and could hear the music up there.

There are a few Aires that have opened, one in Ambleside, one in Wasdale….the former isn’t bookable, but you’ll be lucky to get a spot if it’s good weather. Realistically, at the minute rocking up without a booking in the Lakes isn’t particularly doable or pleasant.

I know that one. Never stayed and next to the road, but very close to the pub!

There’s camping at the Kings Head, thirlspot, not sure about how it’s booked. Lanefoot farm Thornthwaite is an easy stroll from Braithwaite pubs.

edit: and Chapel House farm borrowdale, near Scafell hotel for pub.

Chapel House is what I was thinking of, hadn’t realised the Stonethwaite one had re-opened. Lane foot is good too, been there too and had forgotten about it.

We wild camped on Parkamoor whilst on the Jennride and could hear the noise from Coniston Hall campsite all the way up there.

Loughrigg tarn camp site. Lovely location, easy walk to the Talbot at Skelwith Bridge and the Brit at Elterwater.

Wilsons Arms at Torver has spaces as does The Church House opposite but the Pub as closed down.

Cracking site at Santon Bridge, right next door to the Bridge Inn. Bit pricy but brilliant location.

CAMC site at Manesty in Borrowdale is brilliant. 15 min walk to the Lodore and Borrowdale Gates (both have a public bar).

We wild camped on Parkamoor whilst on the Jennride and could hear the noise from Coniston Hall campsite all the way up there.

It does look like party central every time I ride through it. That is ridiculous though (even though sound carries in weird ways), and getting to the point where the locals will be seeking noise abatement measures.

This is great, 5 minute walk to a pub and Co-op and its on the stream for a dip when its warm.

how is wild camping near scafell pike? Or Buttermere?
Only have a tent so some sites will be overkill,and we like the quiet, but maybe a campsite will fit in to our plans

I imagine that there will be a few tents up by Styhead/Sprinkling tarn on the way to Scafell Pike most fine weekends. Easy to find a quiet spot up there though.

Don’t think you’d get away with wild camping alongside Buttermere though.

Nice rough and ready site at Buttermere though- syke farm, or Seathwaite farm borrowdale for heading up Scafell pike.

It’s years since I’ve been but Turner Hall in the Duddon valley used to be great but basic and has the bonus of the wonderful Newfield Inn down the road.

Camping & Touring . . .

I’m with Lowey and Loughrigg tarn, although the walk to the pub isn’t ideal. It’s not far but a narrow steepish road. It’s a lovely spot and I’ve rocked up and camped without booking a few times. It’s a one tap 2 toilet site. They do have a no single sex groups rule. I spent ages on the phone once persuading her that I’d been before and that a physics teacher, police Constance and Oxford professor of engineering wouldn’t be any bother.

Bays Brown is a nice spot. But they use to have you camping miles from the toilets. Which is fine other than prior started driving to them. Has that improved

Sykeside in Brotherswater is the one that first sprung to mind. Would need to speak to them on the pre-booking point but don’t think they’d be an issue. Right next to the pub as well.

Abbot Park Campsite Bandrake Head near Colton – really quiet 10 mins walk to the Manor House off road or you can actually park at the Manor House Pub itself in  Oxen Park.  Nice Pub too.  Good Beer food ok too.
