Anyone any real life experience with knee pain in the outer side of the knee? From googling it seem it might be a inflamed IT ligament but just wondered if any one on here has had similar.

My knee had always kind of clicked in this area, like the ligament rubs over something under. Then this week for the first time it actually hurt to the point I had the stop and rest for a while. Pain comes and goes regardless of pushing hard or soft. At one point it felt like the pain started shooting upwards.

Before I shoot the old horse, any words of wisdom? And yes, I’m planning to see a specialist if it continues but as this was a first time I thought I’d ask here as well lol.

    TIA

My pain was in the underside of the knee, so more or less same spot but beneath the knee. Saw a Sports Biomechanics Expert and had me complete a gait analysis, turns out I’ve been walking wrong since my early teens when I ruptured all the ligaments in my foot, body weight was all over the place through my feet which buggered up my ligaments and muscles in my knees/hips. Gave me insoles and some standard strengthening exercises and no pain since.

Just to highlight, I’ve seen 4 sports physios and several NHS physios, none of them prescribed the correct fix until the Biomechanics guy came along and thought outside of the box ie, not my knees and more root cause of the problem.

Cleats set up properly, probably already thought of that?

I feel for you, Knee pain sucks.
I had (still have slightly) what you describe.
I saw a sports physio who concentrated on the muscle imbalance between the front and back of my legs as she thought it wasn’t supporting the joint in my old (42?!) age.
She said the IT band was rubbing on the joint causing inflamation and discomfort.
When this didn’t completely sort it she looked at below the knee, at the ankle, and the fact that I wore laced up tall work boots all day was isolating the ankle and so the knee was trying to do the work of a ball and socket joint.
Wearing shoes has got rid of all the pain but I’m left with tendonitis of the knee which can get uncomfortable but not painfull.
I’m not saying this is what you have but as Jolmes says, a good physio will find the cause instead of treating symptoms.

The outside of my left knee got very painful in early to mid July, after swapping to 3-bolt cleat pedals from the 2-bolt ATACS I had been using for ~13 years and then doing power interval rides up a few hills.

The cause? I had positioned the cleats badly for my bow legs, pointing the cleat too much towards my little toes, especially on the left shoe.

After tweaking the cleat alignment, I took it easy for a couple of weeks and then started to gradually increase the power efforts, I’m now putting out my best 5-20min MAP numbers since my prolonged March lurgy without knee pain.

Thanks for the replies, I’ve changed absolutely nothing in my pedal/cleat or bike setup this year, but I have been running a lot more. Last week I had some extra holiday so I did 2 big hikes and 2 big rides, then running the other 3 days. This training schedule load is normal for me, apart from the hiking.

So, my conclusion from reading on the subject so far is that my knees/legs weren’t use to the long hikes and as a result I’ve upset the tendon. I’ve booked an appointment with the sports physio so hopefully they can check and confirm.

Half an hours ago I got kitted up, heading out for a 3hr ride, got about 100yards and turned back as already felt the knee! Frustrating when you’re used to training every day.
