Well, some folk read the instructions. it *should* be collected tomorrow morning 🤞

Which will probably mean they turn up in the afternoon, looking at you as if you’ve put them out due to having to pick it up.

I honestly don’t even attempt to list stuff for free anymore, i just burn it or take it down the skip, at least then i know it’ll be away at the time i want it, without any dealings with idiots.

I don’t want the fridge freezer but I need your settee, some bloke called alani gave away the one I was after. Please make sure you video it first unlike the other timewaster.

    PS Do you deliver?

I only did this once. 2 old fibreglass kayaks from the 1970’s. Messenger went mad. Must of had 60 replies. Eventually a chap turned up to collect them with a vauxhall saloon without even roof bars. We sat the canoes on the roof and tied them on with loads of polyprop string wrapped around the roof via 4 open windows. I never saw him again!

Anything you give away for free on marketplace will be up for sale the next day.

    <serious post> try trash nothing

I gave away 4 items last weekend (humble brag) and only had minor inconvenience. Everybody who came to collect were polite/ grateful/ literate. YMMV of course.

I have had better luck just listing things on eBay for £1 making it clear that the price is nominal and the item is free really.
Tried using freecycle and has same sort of experience as Facebook users and it is painful.

Wife sold a vintage tatty writing desk on fb a few weeks ago. Probably would get 40-50 at auction but just wanted it gone so £20.

She got about a dozen responses within 2 hours all the usual boilerplate stuff. First person even had chat back and forth, agreed to collect at a particular time then ghosted. By now she’s got 30 responses, I would just have moved to the next and so on – but she was more switched on. This guy just messaged me today but he’s bothered to explain he works just along the road so could easily collect either early morning or late afternoon. She felt guilty for not going first come first served – but since he turned up when he said, brought a mate in case it was too heavy for him to lift on his own, and paid full price with no arguing I think her strategy might have changed and she’ll not be so quick to jump on the person who had nothing better to do than sit on Facebook on a Sunday afternoon.

It’s great when it works out like that but frustrating that it couldn’t have been this easy in the first place!

I once tried to sell an old fridge/freezer on gumtree. £10 just to get it gone. Only person to show up was Larry Landlord. He came through to the kitchen, took a look at it, shouted to his mate who was going to do the carrying not to bother before saying to me, it’s for a rental flat and we’re going for a high end look and this has got a couple of dents in it.

Changed the price to £0 but only if you can collect that day. It was gone within 24 hours.

I also sold some gardening tools. People who came round were lovely. Clearly didn’t have a lot of money. Got some decent tools for not a lot and asked if they could take a few of the strawberry plants for their garden which obviously I said yes to.

    Takes all sorts I suppose.

Friend. I see you know about fridges. Mine is not working. What do you think is wrong? Can you come fix it for me? I am home in 30 minutes and can hang around until 3pm if you if it will take that long. Better if you can do it in less time as it will be inconvenient to me.

    The world’s full of roasters.
I gave away all the mechanics and brush-heads etc of a Dyson battery-powered vacuum a couple of weeks back; all in perfect working order, complete with a couple of brand-new parts that Dyson had sent us at one time or another. We’d replaced it, essentially because the (original) battery had ceased holding a charge after about 5 years, and it was easier/quicker to replace the whole thing than muck about sourcing a new battery. Anyways…
It went on Freegle, and elicited something like 15 responses asking to have it. Part way through that period, I put a note on it saying “Bear with me, will be sorting out a recipient over the weekend” and duly put 15 names on bits of paper into a box. Selected a ‘winner’ via that wholly random process, and he happily picked it up a couple of days later. I then marked it as Taken, with a note saying it had gone to its new home.
Fast forward 14 days to yesterday, and a random whinging email turns up from one of the unsuccessful applicants, which says, “I wanted it so I don’t know why you didn’t allow me to collect after I emailed and you said it was available that is unfair”
    I haven’t dignified it with a response.

A few years ago we were clearing out prior to moving. We had a horrible sofa bed which was serviceable but not the prettiest. It was really heavy and the thought of dragging it into the car and lugging it up to the dump didn’t exactly fill me with joy. So we put it on Freecycle – ideal for student flat or someone just moving into their first house we thought.

A bloke replied, and said he could come round straight away. True to his word he turned up with a big estate and his daughter who wanted it for her new house. I helped them load it up and off he went. Happy days!

Two hours later we go to the dump to get rid of a load more stuff and when we turn up we see our sofa bed in the corner of one of the containers. I very much recommend this free and efficient bulky waste collection service!

When we last moved, I inherited a chest freezer that the previous owner left in the garage. I didn’t want it, so put it on eBay, £1 buy it now. I didn’t realise that eBay also listed it as an auction, starting bid of 1p – never mind I thought, anybody who wants it will just use the buy it now option.

Anyhow, somebody decided that they would try and save 99p, and bid 1p on it. This then removed the buy it now option. The same guy who initiated the bidding at 1p ended up paying £15 for it!

We offered an old steel bed frame – sturdy but creaked like **** especially in its increasingly rare excursions into sports mode for free on Gumtree. I took it apart, bagged all the screws and bolts separately to make it easier to rebuild, and this bloke turned up to collect it. I was explaining all the bits and handing the various fasteners to him, as he listened patiently, until after about a minute or so as i was asking whether he had an allen key for it he delivered the stinger of ‘TBH mate, I’ve not been listening, I’m just taking down the scrapyard’ and opened up the back of his transit to show me all loads of craps.

I was half tempted to tell him to sod off, but he was a big bugger.

We did a house clearance of a bungalow we were renovating for a customer. It had loads of good but old ish appliances, Hardly been used and looked new. We listed them all for free.

A guy collected the oven in a timely manor. Next day he brought it back complaining that it was 20 years old.
