Nobody has been able to enlighten me why it has this nickname. I’ve also been told that the locals hate it being called this. Is this true?

Can’t say I’ve ever heard of a local complaining about the name.

Copied from random forum, to be fair I thought it was an accent thing but there you go.

A sneck is another name for a snib. Inver means a mouth of a river. Inverness can be seen as the fastening catch holding the jaw of the Moray Firth closed at the mouth of the river Ness. Hence, Inver Sneck.

Inversneckie was the name Harry Lauder used as a fictional place in his songs – usually to poke fun at someone or some custom – eg “The Laird of Inversneckie” Whether its use predates that or not I don’t know

It’s been in use for a long time.

My first memory of it was it being used ironically in my youth to describe the pious church going disapproval mutterers whose occupation seemed to consist of criticising everything that young people did, especially on Sundays or if the young people were visibly enjoying themselves.

When I returned here 15 years ago, it was general usage.

If I’m heading into town I’ll say something like “heading into ‘Sneck”

Born there – grew up down the road, but no idea where the name came from.

I always would have spelt it with a “sh”

    Invershneckie (It’s the f**keen business!)
