I’m on a course next week and will be staying in Chesterfield, I’m thinking about bring my bike to give me something to do in the evenings, can anyone suggest any good routes nearby? I’m more a winch and plummet rider but I’m not averse to a scenic ride if it has so good stuff.

I was speaking to some teenagers at the local pump track and they were talking about push up DH trails and jump spots in Dronfield.

Sorry I can’t be more specific but I’d like to visit myself if anyone knows anything.

Ambergate woods or Black Rocks. 20 mins drive but exactly what you’re after

Winhill is less than 30 minutes from chesterfield quite possibly the best trails in the area. Warncliffe is probably a similar distance.

Shining cliffe Ambergate would probably require a guide to show you around as the decent steep/tech trails are well hidden. Blackrocks is fairly straight forward to find the trails and the same climb back up.

True – but Winhill is a bit of a mission just for an evening nip out

My ride last Sunday (ebike, but fine on a normal bike) – with added Crich Chase, then Black Rocks and Shining Cliff (Ambergate). Only did a couple of up and downs at the last two locations, but as hammerandcycle says – the stuff in Black Rocks is easy to find

@sharkattack if you do find out where the DH trails are, I’d love to know.

Blacka Moor is probably 20mins from Chesterfield, there’s at least 3 good runs which make a nice evening ride.

I wouldn’t say riding just the trails at winhill is a “mission” but I guess it depends what your used to riding.

It’s fairly easy to ride from the door to pick up Hollymoor Side or Linacre area (classic Vertibrate guide book routes) but The Norfolk Arms is less than a 30 minute drive and puts you in the edge of the peak.

The various circuits of Ashover, steep, sometimes muddy but great fun – all bridleways. Plus the Holymoorside circuit, steep ups and downs but doable after work. All legal.

I didn’t mean riding them, I meant getting there – Ladybower always sends line a big day out for me, rather than an evening nip out.

But that said, I drive from Darley Dale and we park at Hope to ride up.

Haven’t actually done the off piste there yet, been waiting for the dry weather – plan to do it soon

For those interested in the Dronfield runs, I think I know the ones you’re talking about.

If you go over the curly footbridge, over the A61/Dronfield bypass, heading north towards Dronfield/Unston. Head up and to your left and you’ll find them.

For the OP, if you like whinch and plummet then Warncliffe is a good shout. It’s about a 45 minute drive. Park on Station road in Deepcar.

Another one which is fun is Watchwood in Notts. Again a 45 minute drive and more flow than techy compared to Dronfield.

Black rock is a good shout as well.

For me I prefer natural riding, and if you’re not Peak District local I’d recommend a ride along Curbar Edge, taking in the views, up to Longshaw, over to Devils Elbow then back again over Blacka Moor towards Owler Bar roundabout, then follow the permissive bridleway, detailed in the Eastern Moors route, back to Curbar Crossroads. Only if the weather is ok mind.

Holymoorside, Ashover and Bole Hill (beyond Wingerworth) all have classic trails of my youth. Need to bring my bike down in Summer and relive some.

Bole hill is part of my short local loop. Running really nicely at the moment.
