try and offset my shame slightly jimw – the 4 times were on a 3 speed 1954 Claud butler and technically i have commuted on that bike from the site in Wales, to the head office in London, via a site in Farnham for charity

    5 miles each way for an average of say 3.5 days/week over 6 years @ 45 weeks/yr –

3.5*47*6= 987 days (less than I thought it’d be) and about 9870 miles

    That’s a lot of miles on a 1960s 3sp Sturmey Archered Sun. ;o)

15 miles each way is a few more than I’d want to do mind.

I disagree, I think that was my preferred commute TBH. It’s now a lot shorter. Much longer and it got difficult, 26miles each way pushed the times just past the point of being sociable.

If you time it from bed to desk the actual distance isn’t such a big factor.  Especially once you get over 3-5miles and switch from breakfast and showering at home to doing them at wok.  That’s 5-10min at most with no distractions and eat at my desk, whereas at home with the news on, making toast, making a nice coffee etc, then having a relaxed shower, could easily waste the time it took to do a much longer ride.

average 15 miles each way… crikey that’s 180K miles. All that fuel saved, why aren’t I rich!?

That’s part of the reason I started an ISA to squirrel away the money I save not running an everyday car!

i loved my commuting on the bike.

a reason to have a good bike, a reason to swap bikes when i fancied and no need to worry about traffic issues.

my fave commute was when i did 8 years of night shift in the 90’s. 10 mile each way on empty roads.

my last 20 years was 1 mile of road at each end, and 8 mile of canal towpath…… awesome commute.

When I cycle commuted into Central London I was the first cycle commuter in the office, at the start no facilities.  I was there 7 years and in the end we got showers, bike storage, lockers, and c25% of floor were cycle commuters.

Probably my biggest achievement there, it really gathered momentum.  Biggest nudge was the cost saving v season ticket, 2400pa currently, just looked it up.  Tbh, we spent more time comparing routes than working.

    “Waste” indeed….

    Sounds very pleasant!

I really miss my commute. It was 25 miles each way but only did that very rarely. Often I’d drive in with the car, commute home and commute back the next day. During summer it was bliss through Yorkshire Dales quiet lanes. Had lovely shower facilities at work.

I commuted to work by bike most of my working life – but not always the same commute.  However the largest part of the time was using the north Edinburgh cycleway / WoL path which I also use a lot for leisure.  Hard to know exactly how many times but into thousands for sure that I have cycled and walked this path in the last 32 years

Today was my 600th commute in. Just under 11,000 miles ridden. Shortest distance is 7.7 miles, longest was 32 miles (to and from the same location).
