    Does anyone have one?

I have been having sporadic clearout that involve going down to the postoffice with about 10 parcels at a time, is it right the post master should huff and roll his eyes at me?

Does he get paid the same regardless of the amount of parcels shipped and stamps sold?
Also rejects some on size, puts the sticker on and then i have to take it 6miles to the sorting office.

This post office now has the monopoly in our village since the next closest was shut a couple of tears ago.

He takes payment then tells you to deliver the parcel to the sorting office?!!

AFAIK the PO gets a cut of each parcel postage price (I could be wrong, but that’s the impression I get from mine) although I’m not sure if the Postmaster is salaried or not. He did tell me that they didn’t make anything on parcels paid for on the internet though.

But your guy sounds like he’s an utter arse, to be honest. Lots of POs are like this. Farnborough Main PO is staffed with jobsworths. It’s a big place, yet the small PO in Tongham near where I work will bend over backwards to help. I mentioned poting a bike the other day and that I’ve always gone straight to the Parcelforce depot, but he said If I can get it in the door, he’ll accept it!

Our local PO is like this too. Big signs everywhere saying “Use your local post office or it will close” etc etc…but like the OP every time I go in to post anything, or buy anything, I get the feeling that I’m not very welcome and am nothing but an inconvenience.

If I could go elsewhere I would, but the next nearest is miles away.

I sell a lot on discogs (record collector website/marketplace) and I live near a small 2-counter post office, with the nearest others being a mile and a half or a few more three or four miles away. (This in a city of 270,000! 🙄 ) Our post office man sometimes huffs a little bit when I turn up with a pile of stuff if there is a queue, I suppose because people don’t like queueing and he worries that people will migrate to the other six-counter ‘nearby’ post office.

But if there is no one else in the post office at the time, surely the few pence he makes on one parcel is better if it is ten parcels in one customer and actual money transaction. ??

They are paid a salary, which is negotiated by the national federation of subpostmasters. The salary is made up of a series of components, depending on (1) what sdervices they offer (post, pensions, forex, etc.) and (2) the volume of those transactions. On top of that they can then earn money through the retail side (sellign cards, groceries, etc.).

Not a hugely remunerative profession AFAIK.

I think they get paid a salary based on the size of the post office (number of staff etc), so do all other staff, part timers etc,

Not sure on the commission, they used to get a quid for every special delivery sent, but that was when special first started and they don’t seem to be pushing the service so much nowadays,

I think they get pee’d off when people turn up at 4:30 with bags of parcels to be sent when the post is taken at 5:00 – this causes queues to develop with other customers possibly missing that days post.

I know if I go in to our PO at 4:30 there’s nearly always a queue and I get pee’d off…… still forget to go earlier the next time though

i will use sarcasm and cunning to amuse myself next time i go in.

I think a po in the peaks sounds like a decent enough job….
