How do I Tax a New Car ?

Picking up a new car on Weds lunchtime.

I’ve got the MOT certificate & V5 doc.

However, how do I get a tax disc without an insurance certificate?

Can’t change my policy details yet as I’m drivinf my existing car until Weds lunchtime.

The question should be, how are you going to get the car home without insurance ?

(ask the owner/dealer to tax it for you in advance, and pay them when you collect it ?)

Yes, ok … to clarify :

My insurance policy covering my existing car will be changed to the new car, but obviously not until I swap cars – this is easy to do with a quick phone call on the day.

But, so that I can drive the new car home I need to tax it.

You will need proof of insurance to show the bod in the Post Office. Could you get a cover note/docs faxed from your insurer?

….or get the dealer to put tax on it for you.

No.

You need to:

(ask the owner/dealer to tax it for you in advance, and pay them when you collect it ?)

Call your insurance company beforehand and tell them when you are picking up the car, they will issue a certificate to take effect from then, use that on the way over to get the tax from the nearest post office. There’s usually a couple of hours grace on your old car to cover time delays.

I’m also in the process of getting a new car. The dealer requires a soft copy of the insurance certificate, then they’ll tax it.

In my case, they offer 7 days’ insurance free, for exactly this purpose. Once i’ve got it home, i’m free to change my existing insurance policy to reflect the new vehicle.

Did this.

Policy amendment kicks in midnight weds, so new car is covered from when I pick it up but existing car remains covered for 24 hours, and I get a certificate with the new details on to take to the PO & get a tax disc.
