The brake lever adjustment grub screw on my Hope X2 Evo Race front brake keeps vibrating loose when out on a ride, resulting in loss of function as the lever eventually bottoms out on the bar grip. This has been happening since a day at BPW a couple of weeks ago.

I’ve tried Loctite Blue Stick (medium strength) on the grub screw thread which has made little difference. I’ve also got some liquid blue loctite but not tried that yet.

Any ideas from the STW massive?

    Dump them and fit Shimano.

Ha Ha! I should have expected that.

I run Shimano XT on my other two bikes, they’ve needs more maintenance over the years than my Hope brakes. Still good though, if a little on/off in comparison to the Hopes.

Depending on how long the screw is could you get a bit of plumbing tape around it?

Sorry but it had to be done 🙂

Sounds like the thread on either the screw or the lever is worn. PTFE tape on the screw will bulk it out.

It’s a tiny grub screw unfortunately, only about 5mm long I guess so there’s not much thread to play with.

is this the bite point adjust screw on the lever? if so its meant to have a c clip thing on the rear to stop this, if its another screw just ignore me and move along to someone more useful

It’s the grub screw which adjusts lever reach. As far as I know the Race version of Hope X2 brakes doesn’t have the bite point adjustment.

I had similar but only very slowly, I’d have to adjust every couple of weeks.
A little locktite has sorted mine though it was fiddly to apply.

    Which loctite did you use?

So far I’ve tried applying some blue gel/stick loctite, then tightened the screw, left for 3-4hrs then rode. It helped for a couple of short rides then worked loose again yesterday on a 4hr ride.

I’ve also got some blue liquid loctite but not tried that yet as they’re both medium strength and a figured the gel version would do the intended job. I’ve not used the liquid version before.

Linseed oil (cricket bat/ outdoor furniture oil) goes gummy over time and works for me on spoke threads – they stay adjustable, but not loose. Might be worth a go.

Right, I’ve cleaned the thread out with spray isopropyl alcohol, put a couple of drops of liquid blue loctite in there and tightened it back up. I won’t be riding till 7pm tonight so it’s got a good 6/7hrs to cure before then. Fingers crossed!

Full cure is 24hrs isn’t it?

Hmmm…should I wait 24hrs? Could take out the winter bike tonight I guess.

If you ride tonight and it doesn’t work you could always just give it another go (cleaned and reapplied) with a full cure

Yep, no harm in that…it is a lovely day outside 🙂

If you do fit Shimanos and something shakes loose on them, fully expect to have to replace the missing part with a WHOLE NEW BRAKE!! 😆 😆

If it doesn’t solve it, try asking Hope for the replacement grub screw as it may come with the best loctite on it to solve the problem.

One of these might be what you need.
The nylon insert is what holds the adjuster in place.
