Bivvying in the middle of no-where and just staring up at a dark, clear sky.

Sitting with a drink outside a cafe/bar just people-watching whilst not having a care in the world.

The totally unconditional hug from a grand-child.

Yellow gorse flowers against a cloudless blue sky on a bright spring day.

A bit of appreciation when it’s not expected.

A decent cup of tea drank outdoors.

The sound of my kids goofing around together, laughing.

Hard rain on the window as I’m getting to sleep.

Not f*cking-up an easy DIY task!

A good chat on the phone with my mum. Its makes her happy , but makes me sad as her mind and health are failing ( 87 yrs )

Sitting in my front room with a coffee and some belgium chocolate shortbread biscuits  on a  sunday morning watching the  wind build in the Solent knowing thats its going to be great windsurfing conditions ina  few  hours time.

    Washing my car.

My kids playing at being Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome while riding their bikes. I think Dave Brailsford would have had something to say about their wild disregard for the other’s line choice/presence on the trail. Today I got nominated to be Peter Sagan.

Opening the door of a bothy, not knowing what (or who) you’ll find.

I have a question.  Why do we say gorse smells like coconut, when really coconut smells like gorse?

And following that, successfully excavating gorse prickle splinters from your knuckles.

Quality coffee sat in a cafe abroad on a street cafe. Watching the people pass by.

A cool pint sat outside the Queen’s Arms in Littondale.

A whiskey in the winter sat by the window at Sykeside Pub at Brotherswater. Watching the snow, hearing the fire.

Eating a sausage and fried egg sandwich in a cafe. That you’ve not made or cleaned up after. Then walking home, the long way.

These are all a bit too profound and lovely for me to truly qualify as simple pleasures. Surely they are just pleasures.

I’m going to suggest the satisfaction of swapping the red and green ink tubes in a colleague’s coloured biros. Or the new grips I put on my bike this week.

    My family.

    Watching the dog swim.

Seeing/hearing my other half really laugh.

The Campsies, I’ll never get tired of looking at them even though I see them most days.

Having a jobby, then a glory wipe.

    Applying mastic like a boss.

    The smell of petrol.

    Cutting the grass.

Doing something nice for someone, when they didn’t ask gives me the biggest kick of all, especially a stranger.

    A properly loud thunders<span style=”font-size: 0.8rem;”>torm.</span>

Waking really early without feeling tired, and having a couple hours to doss about without feeling guilty that you should be doing something more productive.

Perfectly timing releasing the accelerator on a fast road, and negotiating the approaching junction without braking or using engine braking.

Replacing the rear mech cable and preloading the mech just a tad, occasionally resulting in perfect shifting without any fine tuning on the adjuster.

Cold granary toast with thick real butter and a good dollop of thick-cut marmalade, washed down with some good coffee. Heaven.

The same granary toast buttered and heaped with gooey scrambled egg, not overcooked so that it goes crumby. More heaven.

    Building a wheel.

Putting kids to bed and closing the door then hearing them sing/chatter away to themselves before they drop off to sleep.

Making sure there’s at least three items in a list.

As part of losing weight, I started making yogurt as part of my packed lunch intending to use various fruits to flavour it without the sugar hit that comes with bought yogurt.  First time, I squeezed an orange and added the juice.  I can’t get over how brilliant it is.

Shaving.  I’ve been doing it for nearly 50 years and I still enjoy an unhurried wet shave.

Getting to the top of the hill and blasting down the other side

Standing in the the first day’s warm sunshine after a long, cold winter

    Muddy puddles at speed

Walking out of the optician’s wearing a new pair of specs

    Sex.  It’s fun

The smells of baking bread, freshly ground coffee, cut grass in the rain

Counting the days to retirement and looking at pictures of the place I’m retiring to (Xlendi)
